dash lights
The dash lights in my truck weren't working so I pulled the guage panel out to preplace the bulbs and look things over. I noticed that there was a lead wire coming out of the steering column with a bulb socket for one of the 4 locations. I figure this socket powers the rest so stuck a new bulb in it and I coudn't get it too light up. I changed the light switch and still no power from the lead socket. Anybody know if there is something inside the coumn that could be causing the problem or does this socket have to be grounded to the gauge panel to work?

its a fiber optic cable thats supposed to light up your shift indicator but from my expeariance it has a nasty habbit of slippin out of the pointer. have you tried flipping the socket around, cause i think it only works one way but dont quote me

I had the same problem, and did the same thing that you did - I ended up replacing the fuse box which solved the problem, though I know that's not what the problem was. It was probably a ground, but I was tired of spending time trying to figure it out, and I'm not much of an electrician anyways.

that is correct.
Your inst panel needs grounded to light up, and then there's 2 fuses that you can check on... Since you've replaced the light switch, and I'll assume you twisted the knob to the left, after that, it's time to chase wires and checkl the printed circuit board on the panel. |

I checked the printed circuit and I'm going to change the entire panel anyway since I bought one off of ebay with the white gauges. Since the socket with the wires going to the steering column is just the supply for the shifter light then it won't work until I hook that socket back up to the gauge panel so I don't really know yet if the light switch fixed it or not. I'll have to hook the gauge panel back up to check it. I plan on replacing all the fuses anyway just so I'll have new ones.

If you have a voltmeter, two fuses to check at the fuse box are cluster feed and tail stop.

inst panel, and brake lights. While I have never verified it, I don't think cluster feed runs the guages. I think it is fed off the guages and protects anything you hook to the cluster feed terminal.
