Project Plan
I want to put together a formal plan to rebuild my 69 GMC...I know crazy right....
I'm wondering, is there anyone out there that has their formal plan in electronic form that I could forge off of? I'm going to do a complete frame-off, but I want to plan it out so I know when to spend money and what to spend it on. I do realize that there are some things that I'm not going to know until I tear it down. Thanks, Mike |

Re: Project Plan
this is just my 2 cents... you can't plan out a restoration.. unless you do one every year or something, it'll just hold you up, p!ss you off, anf make it feel like a job.
Take your time, have fun. you'll know when its time to spend money, and you'll know when to take a spending break, and just spend your back breaking labor. |

Re: Project Plan
Longhorn Man makes a very good point. For me... if I tried to make a plan and stick to it, it would suck the fun out of it.
If your talking about what order to do things in, some of the build threads here would work for a plan and they are even illustrated!!

Re: Project Plan
I don't know that it's a bad idea. I just use Excel, create a spreadsheet that allows for me to track the items that I know I have to do, track the prices, S&H as well as links of vendors websites. While I don't have a plan for a frame off, it does give me the ability to figure out which parts are priorities, and how much I'm going to end up spending for each effort.
Granted, the down side of that is the fact that I run a sum at the bottom, and see how much I've spent, and how much I still have to spend..... so long as it comes in cheaper than a new truck, I'll keep moving forward. And, considering that trucks aren't getting any cheaper, it looks like I'll keep my 72 for a LONG time. |

Re: Project Plan
I don't really use a plan.I try to do safety stuff first then mechanical, and body then interior fitment. Then paint, and final interior.(I have yet to get to paint on one.

Re: Project Plan
Some newer computers come with Microsoft Project, which is a scheduling tool, and is fairly straight forward to use.
Excel is prob your best bet, easy to use. I've never done a schedule for one of my projects but have built a spreadsheet listing everything needed for it. Then tracked what has been spent vs how much left to be spent. A note here. This get's depressing. As you go you will remember stuff to add to the list. All that little stuff adds up. It's always more than you think. Also, when I did the first pass on one of my more recent projects the estimate was out of this world (a new car type figure), what it will allow you to do is figure out where you might be willing to compromise. Do you need the supercharged 502 crate engine or can you get by with a used low mileage 6.0 fuel injected engine. Do you spend the time restoring your trim, or buying all new NOS. Now a days, I do a spreadsheet come up with a high spot estimate, let the wife know how much I think I'll spend ... then discuss it!!! After that I don't track cost any more or go back to that spreadsheet. You will always know a rough figure of what you have spent, at least I do. I don't want to know down to the penny. If you want to pm me your email address I can send you a spreadsheet that I came up with, it's not big deal though.

Re: Project Plan
More than anything, I want to make sure I think of what I'm doing or else this project will never see the road again and that would be a great disservice to my grandfather and this awesome 69.
Thanks, Mike |
