vent window seal installation - help!
I've been looking for links or threads on how to install new vent window seals on my 1970 c-10. But no luck so far.
Can someone point the way? I'm sure this is written up somewhere. thanks Mark |

Re: vent window seal installation - help!
Geoff;
Thanks, with your instructions I am getting it done. Another question. I got the window out of the frame. The glass itself is sandwiched in a metal channel with a rubber seal. My rubber seal is ratty looking. Can it be replaced? thanks Mark |

It can be replaced. Most glass shops will sell you some but it IS getting harder to find. Just be careful not to bend the frame cause they will bend.

Re: vent window seal installation - help!
Butyl edge-wrap tape, comes in different widths & thicknesses. Most glass shops have it in a BIG roll or two, or several.
The window glass is just a force-fit into the frame, which is like a U-channel, with the tape as a spacer / filler as well as a water-proofer. You clean the old broken glass & butyl out of the channel with a screwdriver, & a solvent. A touch of heat may help soften the old tape, if you're trying to take a non-broken glass out of the frame. Believe it or not, you lay / wrap the tape on the glass edge & literally beat it into the U-channel of the metal frame which is standing vertically on edge on a workbench (or piece of soft wood like a 2 x 4 board) by hitting the glass edge (the edge away from the tape) with a rubber mallet & you drive or wedge the tape & glass down into the frame together all at once. Some soapy water helps lubricate things. Razor blade trim-off of the excess butyl tape sticking out, neat to the metal window frame channel. That way, it doesn't matter if the tape is off-center a bit on the channel as you're driving it & the glass into place. Done ! Sounds (& looks) brutal & "bet there's gonna be a broken glass" crazy when you see a good installer do it the first time, but that's the way it's done. Takes way more time to get the old out & the channel cleaned up than it does to put the new one in. Last edited by 68shortstep; 05-06-2009 at 06:43 PM. Reason: typo |

Re: vent window seal installation - help!
Call me ghetto but when mine came out I used black RTV in the channel and pushed the window back in. After it dries it wont turn loose.

Re: vent window seal installation - help!
How do you remove the chrome latch from the vent window? I'd like to clean it up and lube it.
thanks MArk |

Re: vent window seal installation - help!
Hey Mark,
Sorry, I can't remember how I did this, but.....FYI....if you don't already, you might want to pick up a Factory Assembly manual....has lots of good exploded views for things like this....They are $35-$40US....check with some board vendors (click on the link in my signature and scroll down)...Hope this helps!

Re: vent window seal installation - help!
The vertical seal rivets are a pain in the butt....I used pop rivets instead and they worked great.
