Installing front cab support on 64 pickup

I'm replacing the rusted out cab supports, floor, and rockers on my '64 pickup. When test-fitting the front cab support, I found that there is about a 1/2" gap between the "ears" and the floor support. Also, it doesn't mount at exactly 90 degrees. I braced the door jamb before taking it apart, and I remounted the door to confirm that it still fits OK, so I don't think the cab has shifted while I've been working on it. However, who knows if it was really square before I started?

If anyone else has encountered this problem, I'd like to hear what you did about it. How can I weld the cab support to the floor support? Should I fill the space with a piece of thick steel, or do you have any other suggestions?

I sure did on my 66 and Alan did on his 65 project. We both bent our ears out straight and then just butt welded the pieces. I think there are some pics of it i Alans Classic build on this site.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the quick reply. Did yours mount up square, or was it also off a little?

I think the main part will be that it lines up square at the other end where it bolts up to the A pillar. I had taken mine off....Alan left his on for a reference. If the A pillar is still there, line it up with it and just weld the rest in where it fits.

That means you may either have to weld the hole shut on the inboard end and re-drill it, or cut a slot so the bolt will fit thru.
