Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
just picked up a near PERFECT speed warning gauge cluster. however, it did not include the ridiculously expensive buzzer and harness. I have found an affordable buzzer @ Cheyenne-Super Man and a new repop harness, but would like a pic of the back of the gauge cluster to determine where the buzzer mounts and how the harness is routed. the buzzer does mount on the back of the cluster tin, correct?
could someone post a pic?? thanks gang!!

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
The buzzer mounts on a bracket on top of the column. Just a single wire to the back of the tin. I can take a pic later if you still need it. Eric

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
Eric,
could I trouble you for a pic of the column mounting?? I did figure out that the brass mounting pin on the back was some type of grounding lug, but couldn't figure out where the buzzer mounts.

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
All the ones I've taken off were mounted on firewall like Rob's pics, Not saying Eric hasn't had some with a bracket. GM did some things different in some of there assembly lines.

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
TCB-!-I too am working on a speed warning dash and have some of the same questions you have-I did not understand what that brass looking washer was for-you said a ground( i think) and I would guess it's a ground for the speedo?would the ground for the dash cluster do the same thing or is there an additional ground to that odd brass washer? I agree, pictures or a diagram would be helpful. Do you know if cheyenne man has anymore buzzers? Thanks for any help!

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
If you look closely at the white needle (the set needle on the speedo) there is a small wire that grounds out when the regular needle crosses or comes into contact with it. This causes the circuit to close and the buzzer to go off. The brass connector is one pole of the circuit with the rest being located in the buzzer/relay. Instant buzz . All of the setups I have seen have mounted onto the firewall as others have stated. As far as the buzzers seat belt buzzers from same year cars are relatively the same -they will work but have an extra pin, camaros came with speed alerts as did corvettes so your options are a little more broad than you might think. Almost everything is repoped for camaros and vettes including the correct type knob and retaining nut. The cable for the cars is about 6 inches longer than the truck units but will work without a hitch. They will run approx. $35 from Classic industries and other suppliers. Hope this helps, Harold

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
The one i just recently pulled from an original truck and it was listed on the spid, was mounted on the "hoop" bracket over the steering column. The only thing i can think is the truck was a 69. I think the one i found before that was on the firewall. (that was a 67) The 69 also had 2 screws in it. So i am unsure of what is correct now.

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
Thanks a BUNCH gang, especially you Rob!! perfect pic. that will at least get me started. as stated, I pcked up a repop harness at Classic Parts and it looks really well done. just need to figure out where that darn buzzer mounts.
I don't want to spend upwards of a $100 on evilbay for an original buzzer, so going for a repop there as well. used to be a easy pulling my gauge cluster, but now I have the main harness, the s.w. harness, the oil line, the tach harness, and the vacuum gauge tube. I don't think I'll be taking it out again anytime soon!!!! again, that guys for the help!!!

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
I think the buzzer was placed anywhere the assembly line worker could get his/her hands. I've looked through the factory assembly books and found zilch on where the buzzer was mounted. however, it was probably listed in a special assembly line bulletin. however, it could have just been the luck of the draw??
but good info here guys, I appreciate the help!!

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
Here are some pictures of a factory harness and how it connects to the cluster (from a '67 CST and the buzzer was mounted to the firewall as pictured above):

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
a-ha! great pic badpeanut! yep, that how mine looked before I tore it down to bare bones. I didn't have the harness, but with your pic, I can at least compare the length of the wires on my repop. thanks!! rep points!
Nate, you know me. the minute I got it, I started the tear down and cleaning. the gauge faces are the cleanest I have ever seen and the speed warning is tight and works like a charm. I am going to have to find a way to adapt it to my tach/vac cluster in the truck now.. which brings me to a question for all who have worked on these. I need to install a ground post on a tin that never had one mounted on it. this is the post that connects the speedometer, through the tin, to the wiring harness.

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
chas,
they were only installed on '69 and below. the cruise control option sort of nixed the idea.... no, there wasn't a visual warning on the cluster, only and audible buzzer located approx. in the area Rob has shown in the pics above.

Re: Speed Warning Gauge Cluster Pic Request
I have that exact box (looks like a relay or flasher) on all my trucks, 3-1970 and 1-1971. the wires go to the fuse box though.... what is this then? did they have a door open buzzer?
I will post pics of mine to compare. chas
