Best deals on tools
Now that I am finally getting started on my truck, I'm continually realizing I need more tools. So, who has the best deals? I'm currently looking for a set of deep well impact sockets. Everybody's got them, but who has the best quality to price ratio.

Re: Best deals on tools
Man thats a tough call on the impact sockets. You can get a HF set for around $25.00. Next step is sears at about $180.00. Maybe buy two sets at HF knowing one will break in the middle of your project?

Stick with Sears or even Lowes Kobalt stuff. It's way better than HF or Northern tool. The latter stuff is JUNK. But if you like tools for life, Get Mac or Snap on. 5 times the cost, worth every penny. |

Re: Best deals on tools
if your impact is lame, then the harbor freight ones will hold up for quite a while.
However. if you have a strong compressor and a good impact, then don't even consider the cheap ones. |

I would go with craftsman....(cheaper) best bang for the buck.

Re: Best deals on tools
Lots of tools floating around in the used market right now. I'd go with a quality brand and take advantage of some realistic prices. All it takes is a little time and an eye for knowing what's worn out or junk.

Always had good luck with Craftsman. HF if I am not going to use the tool that often, and if it something that won't kill me when it breaks.

Re: Best deals on tools
I don't have a high dollar impact. It's a Kobalt. I'm running it with a 60 gal. compressor. So far I haven't busted any regular sockets with it.
The Northern Tool by me doesn't even sell a set, just individual sockets. There's a harbor freight down the road that I might check out. Sometimes I feel like by the time I buy all the tools I'll need there won't be any money left to work on my truck.

Re: Best deals on tools
Hey, this got me thinking. What's the biggest socket that I would most likely need working on my truck? I'm thinking something to do with the suspension probably. Trailing arm? U-bolt nuts? Any ideas.

The pinion nut takes a 1 5/16" socket.

Re: Best deals on tools
believe it or not the Horror Freight impacts get pretty good reviews from most of the folks over at garagejournal . com ... even when used with something like an IR industrial / commercial gun and a good compressor.
i wouldn't use their hand tools for any amount of money though ... |

Re: Best deals on tools
I have a complete set of the HF impacts used daily with an IR 2135T for the past 5 years, never broken one yet.... They're wrenches are junk but they have quite a few tools that are worthwhile, I have a set of snap ring pliers that are around $20 a set now vs $120 from the tool truck. Had em for years never broken one. It all depends on what your gonna use them for and how often. I will open it up and look at it before buying it from them. I bought my auto darkening welding helmet from them and couple of body guys I know love the helmets too. All in all it depends on what you get and what you wanna spend.

Re: Best deals on tools
Looks like I might make a trip to HF tomorrow. Sounds like they will be more than adequate for what I want to do. That means there's that much more that I can spend on my truck. Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Best deals on tools
I own a set too. I have oly used them once so far. Being unemployed forces me to really watch my spending. I figure its better to bust a cheap socket than to put a godd regular one on the impact. I also bought a creeper board too. Don't buy one there. Mine snapped when I used it the first time I'm a big boy though.

Re: Best deals on tools
send me your email and i'll send you an HF 20% off coupon for this weekend...
I use their impact sockets, cuttoff wheel discs, 3 lb hammers and stuff like that. No ratchets, welders, compressors though. I suggest buying a good compressor that has 10+ cfm of air available. I wish I would have spent the money for a decent one now. Tractor Supply has decent one's local from what I noticed, you need 220v though to get good air though try this for the coupon http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/...1&keycode=0000

Re: Best deals on tools
Check the local pawn shops if you have access. Many times they have good tools at bargain prices. I've picked up some snap-on and craftsman stuff on occasion.
