How hard is it to redo the gauges?
I was thinking about replacing the old gauges in the truck. Some work some don't, the gauge cluster looks to be setting in the dash wrong. Kind of like it don't fit. How hard is it to make your own? Does anyone have a how to on this?

Re: How hard is it to redo the gauges?
These are Equus Guages. They were inexpensive from Kragen (before O'reilly took over and ruined them). These guages were easy to wire in and have been fairly accurate. Basically all I did was to modify the guage housing for the new guages and made a mount plate for the speedo and tach. Pretty easy overall.

Re: How hard is it to redo the gauges?
I thought of that one, but to be honest I didn't like it too much. Mainly because the stock gauges look like crap, I want them gone.

If your truck is as nice up close as it looks in the teeny tiny avatar pic, I'd PM captkaos and throw in a set of Dakota Digitals...provided you can spare $650.

Re: How hard is it to redo the gauges?
The mechanic part of me tells me this is easy, but the dyslexic part of me looks at all the wires in the dash and hyperventilates lol..
So what I’m thinking is if I buy a set of oil, water, volts, tack and speedO I should be able to use the wires that come with the gauges and basically rewire them. I shouldn’t need to mess with any of the old wires. I should be able to just move them aside and feed the new wires to their right places. The only thing that I see that would be an issue is the power to them (fuse box). Should I use the original or buy a separate box? I want to make this as easy as possible. I don’t think making the gauges fit the bezel will be too hard. So I guess I’m looking for ideas on how to wire up these things. |

Re: How hard is it to redo the gauges?
My wiring is kind of a mess. If I had more time I would redo it. I learned alot about making harness' with re-wiring my truck. Maybe when I transfer I'll clean it up.
Speedo, Tach, Fuel and Volt guages all need acc power, ground and the "input". For the inputs I used the stock fuel guage wire, the acc power for the volts, installed a new tach wire and the speedo cable. Also there are the lights for each guage which is a grouund and the feed of the dash light circuit. I know my write up isn't the greatest. The wiring really isn't too bad and its eaier than my description makes it. I can help over the phone if that might help. |

Re: How hard is it to redo the gauges?
I used a new tach wire. The tach came with 3 different wires for the tac signal and and is adjustable for 4, 6 or 8 cyl. I used the stock speedometer cable. It bounces a little between 30 and 35 but it's been good overall. I forgot the end of it didn't connect right onto the back of the speedometer. It just kind of sticks on there.

Re: How hard is it to redo the gauges?
Dang Ble, I just went through you cluster thread. You did one hell of a job. It would take me months to do that. I'm not the sort of guy that says I can't do something unless it's true. I'm pretty good at a lot of things, but what you did with the wires just puzzles me. That's why for me it would just be easier to replace all the gauges and run new wires. Well I think it would be.
