Blew the rearend out... now questions.

So Im looking at replacing the rear end... and checking out my options:
1. What years interchange with my 87' as a DIRECT swap, would the 89' pictured below work?

This just hasppened Friday so I haven't had time to take measurements, look into details, etc..

Thanks,
Anthony

Re: Blew the rearend out... now questions.

I would stick with the 73-87 trucks or 73-91 2wd 'burbs for a source.
Is that rearend out of an '89 pickup? If so I would say it's different.

Re: Blew the rearend out... now questions.

Sorry to hear about the rear Anthony. I think now is the time to build a rear with a posi and a little gear . As to the 88 up rears , I am pretty sure they are a little wider from mounting flange to flange which might cause problems with the wheel clearance and the leaf spring perches are a different width .

Sorry to hear this news , I love your truck and would love to own it , with that said I would not jump to any major decision about replacing the whole housing , Get it home , jack it up , take the rear cover off and inspect what happened. You might be surprised , might just be a broken spider gear or something minor.

Your truck should have an 8.5 rear , which for what your doing should be fine , Let me know what you need for parts and I can walk you through any repair , I will be glad to help....

Sorry to hear about your truck. It's sad to see such a nice truck being towed away. I think f. monroe is correct about the overall length of the differential being wider. You could always upgrade to a 12 bolt rearend. It's a direct swap but you have to change the u joint and shaft end.

Awesome guys... thanks for all the info. Im not going to be able to go all out with it right now (received my lay-off papers Friday as well) LOL... but its all good- I'm going to have the time to work on it!
I did come accross a new Eaton Posi carrier? on Sat for a $150 if I end up going that route. Early in the game... hoping to tear into it on Monday in my dads pit.

Re: Blew the rearend out... now questions.

Great to hear. That should be fun. I hope to be able to find a taller gear for mine to help offset the 3 speed in it. I put the 12 bolt in from a 77 Burb which was a simple swap, just had to get an adaptive u-joint. Not bad though. Cheaper than a new shaft.

Re: Blew the rearend out... now questions.

You will need a conversion joint so this will be a bolt in.
there is no upgrade going from 10b to 12b though. 10b had more splines on the axles and larger pinion shaft..

Correct-O... I actually recieved a call from him yesterday saying that the Posi unit that I picked up the other day from another friend will not work. So I will be going with the standard rearend with a 373... will be back on the road by the weekend.
