Gave My '71 Away...............

Was riding the strassenbahn (street train in Austria) to my middle sons baseball game yesterday. We were talking and his 13th Birthday is coming up July 5th (July 4th in my eyes cause the Doc. ripped us off by 1 minute, lol) so I decided to give him my project truck. It's sitting in storage now in a million pieces. I told him it was his as long as he is in the garage helping me put it all back together so he knows the truck from the ground up. He was all happy, I told him it will still have all the goodies I bought for it. 4-way airbag system, complete suspension setup, etc, etc, etc except for the big block 4-speed stuff. Thats more stuff for my Camaro =). I will put the GMPP 350 H.O. back in it with the T.H. 400. It should be just fine for him. I WILL NOT have a repete of my oldest son's doings, I gave him my '58 pick-up for his 15th birthday. All he had to do was install the rear brake lines and bleed the brakes and put the bed back on and it was ready to go. It had a '75 Corvette 350 with a 4-speed in it. He traded it for a broken down 4-wheeler while I was in England for 3 years. The '71 will stay in my name till I see fit to sign it over to him. Should be a fun project with him and keep him out of trouble.

Now that is what I call a future "father and son" bonding project which is very . I did a similiar thing that your oldest son did...my father gave me his 54 Chevy 1/2 ton truck. I sold it about 6 months later for $125. All I can say is...I was young, foolish and

Yeah, we all have done some foolish things when we were young. I didn't yell at him to bad but I also will never let him live it down. The middle son will have the option of selling it back to me first before doing anything else with it. It should be a fun project and a learning experiance of a lifetime for him.

WOW, Great plan. I know that will be something he looks forward to and will remember forever. I know working on cars with my Grandad is some of my best memories and they were times that he used to teach me all he knew about everything.

Re: Gave My '71 Away...............

My son who is 43 and his two 15 year old sons and I work on these old trucks together.

My son is the expert though. Both of his sons rebuilt their 350s with his guidance.

I am not real sure what my role is in the process, sounding board mostly I guess, I help when I can.

I have learned a lot about these old trucks and of course about my son and grandsons. Since I was not around my son a lot when he was growing up it is good we are spending time together and will have memories to share.

Oh well, kind of drifted off there.

Good luck with the project and have fun.

Danny

Re: Gave My '71 Away...............

Ive given my boys a couple old cars and trucks. But they've either sold them or Ive taken them back. They like the old stuff, but I think they would rather I fix em up and then give em the cars. Now with my record of getting my panel done I think they would know better LOL.

There is one exception. I gave my oldest my old 72 C10 burb and he says that one will stay his forever.

Re: Gave My '71 Away...............

Hey Bill,
I may have a soft spot for a father/son project but not that soft, lol. I find it hard to give up the shorty 4X4 so I gave him the the toy since i got another toy (my Camaro) to play with. I'll put the big block and 4-speed in the Camaro, take the LT1 from the Camaro and put in the 4X4 and take the 330 horse 350 crate motor out of the 4X4 and put it back in the project with the turbo 400 trans like it was the first time I redid it. He frowned a little when I told him he doesn't get the bigblock. I fly home on July 19th, I can't wait. I smell a big Porterhouse Steak with my name on it, MMMMMMMMMMM. I'm sure I will be contacting you soon for some parts for both trucks. When is your truck show?
