Should I change my mind?

I've been sorta leaning towards keeping a manual trans in my 68 even if I swap to a v8. But yesterday I found a 2000 1/2 ton with 86K. It has a 5.3/4L60E and is a salvage truck. Hit in the drivers door, but fully funtional otherwise. Title work is screwed up, so the guy is parting it out or selling outright. I can get the whole truck for $800.00 The temptation of modern road manners is strong. Has anyone put a figure on the amount of $ it takes to swap... aside from the engine/trans purchase?

Re: Should I change my mind?

That sounds like the way to go, buy the 2000 and swap out that engine/tranny.

Folks on here that have done that swap just love it.

Wow, having the entire truck outta make that swap a breeze! There's plenty of info here to get it done. I would definitely change my mind, and I just swapped over to a 5 speed myself!

Re: Should I change my mind?

as long as you get the whole truck, including the ECM, as you will need that as well. not sure if you will need to do any reprograming on it..

good luck and of course take some pcs.

Manual trans is more than half the fun of driving.

I agree but I could never figure out how to drink coffee, steer, and shift at the same time. Plus...my better half wants to be able to drive The Circuit Rider once it get out of the shop and she get her left foot and right foot confused which is not good when breaking.

Re: Should I change my mind?

Classic Trucks magazine has an on-going series about doing a 5.3 swap into a '67-72. You should check them out. Lots of detail data in it.

Talking Re: Should I change my mind?

I really love driving a manual, however I think this is a good deal on the set up. I don't have to worry about my wife driving it untill I install some power steering. I have been looking at the last couple issues of Classic Truck and will be looking up the various mounts, adapters, etc. that they use to try and get a figure for what the additional parts bill be. I guess I should then follow the old hot rodding rule and double it. I am very grateful to have all the info on this site, including threads specific to this type of swap. Hey thanks again for the input, and let it continue I'll take all the help I can get.

If you put an automatic in it,you won't be able to push start it if you have a dead battery or starter problem
