Axle swap from a 68 to a 66?! Will this work?
Ok, I have a friend wanting to convert his '66 3/4 ton to 1/2 ton. I have a rear axle, drive shafts, and front suspension (uca. lca, spindles, drum) off of a 68-70. Would this be a bolt up swap on the rear end? We both have trailing arm coil spring rear ends. Would he need the drive shaft? In the front. Would he just need spindle out? Or the complete uca, lca, etc? Are the control arms the same 66 to 68-70? I know the complete crossmember is an easier swap, but, his is a running driving truck and he does not want the busted knuckles and pain in the "arse" of trying to do this swap with motor installed..
Any and all suggestions and help would be appreciated.....Thanks in advance for your knowledge. Adam |

Re: Axle swap from a 68 to a 66?! Will this work?
I believe that will work, I know kevin (TX firefighter) is doing a swap from 72 to a '63, and i will be doing a '72 to a '65 suspension conversion. The '66 and 68 axles should be the same width and should bolt right up. I have only done the complete front crossmember swap, but IIRC you can do the spindle out. you can always call and see if the balljoints are the same for a 66 3/4, and a 68 1/2 if not R&R the balljoint in his current UCA/LCs's. I am sure someone will chime in with more knowledge...
Good luck ... Bttt

I put a complete '68 rear in a '65 last summer and it was a bolt in deal. I can't help on the front. I have always changed the complete cross member... LockDoc

Re: Axle swap from a 68 to a 66?! Will this work?
you'll want to grad the shaft for the swap. I got lucky on my 3/4 ton to 1/2 ton conversion (all '72 burb parts) I was able to slide the rear half of the 1/2 ton shaft onto the 3/4 ton front shaft, and it all worked out perfect.
