Re: Dana 44 front end year swaps?
John,
All chevrolet 4x4 front ends up to 1987 bolt in, both dana 44 and corporate 10bolts.. The dana 44's do have minor differences through out the years.. 73up had larger U-joints in the axle shafts, different out spindles and bearings. 76/77 had a solid steel dust shield and used different calipers than the rest.. cant tell you much about the 10 bolt stuff. What are you looking to accomplish? If you need any dana 44 parts shoot me a call.. Mark |

My brother and I are currently in the process of upgrading his 70 K5 Blazer with 8 lug, 14 bolt axles out of a '78 Chevy 3/4ton truck. I know that the front axle will bolt up, but as far as connecting the drive shaft up, will I have to get a different drive shaft for the front, or is there a simple u-joint fix to swap over? Same for the rear axle? Speaking of the rear axle, I havent verified it for myself, but I was told that the spring perches of the Dana 44 will have to be relocated inwards half an inch on both sides to work with the spring location on the Blazer. Do you agree with that? Thanks, Ransom Last edited by nitrojunkie383; 07-07-2009 at 07:36 AM. Reason: wrong information |

Re: Dana 44 front end year swaps?
Ransom,
The front should be a direct bolt in.. including the driveline.. I have never put a 14bolt in so I can not confirm the perch or U-joint differences, I have heard that some will pretty much bolt in and others need the perches moved, I do know you will have to move one shock mount as all the 73 up rear axles I have seen have one shock on the front and one on the rear of the axle.. |
