drop spindles and rally wheels

This has probably been covered like a hundred times in the past, so sorry if this is a repeat. I didn't come up with anything by searching.

Just wondering if a 2.5" or 3" drop spindle will fit inside a stock 15" rally wheel.

I'd like to lower my truck some to get it out of the clouds, but I have no future plans of air bags.

Re: drop spindles and rally wheels

2.5" will be fine, but I have heard the 3" might lead to some rubbing issues. I've ran the 2.5" with rallys myself, but not the 3", so hopefully someone else will chime in soon.

Nice truck BTW, I love the color!

Re: drop spindles and rally wheels

Killer truck !

From what I have read around with a 3'' spindle you will have to "relief" or "grind" the lower a-arm to clear the rim (at full lock )and possibly take some off the top of the caliper to clear the rim.

I totally dig the truck, My truck is a 81 long bed and I call it ol blue too !!

Im still hunting for a sport bumper to replace my step like yours

Re: drop spindles and rally wheels

4 inch backspace on the wheel is the issue.
I have used 2.5" and 3" drop spindles,... and if the wheel has a 4" backspace you will need to do some clearancing on the lower control arm around the ball joint area.
It's not a big deal.

Re: drop spindles and rally wheels

I'm running DJM 3" drop spindles w/8" rallys all around. I had to smooth out the top of the spindle because it rubbed. All in all they look great and there was very little mod to get them just right. All I used was a angle die grinder and a carbide bit.

My wheels have 4 1/4 back spacing with 3" djm spindles and I just had to grind a little off the brake caliper ear

Re: drop spindles and rally wheels

Thanks for the input everyone. By the looks of it a 2.5" spindle just clears and a 3" requires some grinding.

Re: drop spindles and rally wheels

If I used a 2 1/2 inch dropped spindle and 1" lower spring will 15 x 8 rallys rub on my 72?

Belltech is 3"

olblue81- If you don't mind doing a little extra work to make them clear, the 3" spindle is the way to go. It's much better to have spindle drop where you can rather than spring drop. The spindle will on effect the ride, whereas the shorter the spring the stiffer it becomes.

Besides, you will want more later....

Re: drop spindles and rally wheels

I have 3" spindles, and 2.5" springs. Running the stock rally wheels with 245/60/15 tires. And I had some rubbing on the spindle but it only needs to be knocked down a tiny bit. I worried about it at first but...have no fear, if 3" is the drop you want, grind the spindles to clear the wheels. You will be fine. Here is a couple I took today next to a wheat field. Hope this helps you decision.

Did you want more info on my set up? If that's what you wanted, here you go. It is a stock set of wheels. I have 245/60/15 Cooper Cobra tires.

Re: drop spindles and rally wheels

I used a 2.5" McGaughy's spindle and a 1" drop Belltech coil spring that I actually cut a 1/2 a coil off of to set the front down where I wanted it. It is just a flip in the rear. I am running 15x8 Rally's w/ 255/70r15's all the way around with absolutely no rubbing. Oh, BTW, it rides great!!!
