Need DASH help ASAP
My truck had the factory, low option, no guage, just idiot light dash.
I got a dash with the guages, and added my own tach to it (turned out nice BTW).. Anyways, I have the old one out, and new one ready to go in. It appears some of the wires are different from the plug. Can anybody verify I can just plug in harness and go (minus maybe a few sensors on engine)??? Before I start switching wires around. I sure hope this is plug and play. ------------------ Jeff Scott '70 GMC Stepside, Short box '67 Camaro '63 Nova '92 GMC typhoon

In particular I am noticing the old one (no options) the pins go to dash lights.
Same pins on new one, go to battery guage... Might just plug it in, water hose ready, and hope it works... ------------------ Jeff Scott '70 GMC Stepside, Short box '67 Camaro '63 Nova '92 GMC typhoon

Look at Paul's tips page. http://www.gmcpauls.com/Tech%20Tips1.htm
You have to change the connectors around in the harness plug that plugs into the dash cluster. When changing from idiot to gauges. ------------------

Do you have a pic of your new dash. I am considering adding a tach to mine and the factory tach seems beyond worthless with its 5000 rpm range. I'd like an idea when I'm running over 7000.

Thanks for the heads-up 71 Chev, learn something new everyday
mikep, here's a shot of my dash w/tach I've also mounted a 3.5 dia tach in the factory hole but I like the bigger tach with light myself. http://www.zkast.com/images/P5180002.JPG ------------------ Pictures and more... piston@zkast.com '71 LWB 350/350T, PS/PB Special options? Send me your email, I will send you picture.
Got guage almost done, just lacking voltage wires... Too bad I found the digram AFTER I figured it out. Atleast I could double check myself. ------------------ Jeff Scott '70 GMC Stepside, Short box '67 Camaro '63 Nova '92 GMC typhoon

The basic plug is pin to pin different from the deluxe. I sat and checked the wiring with a voltage source one day. The easiest is to go with a deluxe harness etc, but I imagine you can change pin to pin to get where you want. So I've learned as well watch that you have a good ground as you go.

If you just plug it in, your dash will not work right, and you'll be looking for a replacement fuel guage. Trust me.

if your swithing out gauges from dummy lights to all gauges the wiring harness is differnt will not work .the way i have done it is get harness that is wired for all gauges out of another truck you need the harness under the dash, with fuse block its not hard to switch out kinda like pulling plug wires one at a time same thing under dash when you switch out. make sure if you have auto that you get a harness with auto for the nuturel safty switch oc steering colum.

negative big 'o .the only difference under the hood in regards to the harness is g.m.c has double pins for the 4 head lights. chevy is all the same, weather or not you have warning lights or all gauges in the cab the wiring harness does not have to be changed .after putting in the harness under the dash you should just plug in your two piece harness under the hood to your new harness.

if you refer to paul's tech tips you'll notice that you just rearrange the wire leads .the only new wires to run will be the temp.guage, voltage, and a new powr. lead from the connector over by your battery.some of the old wires you just need to clip and tape.just went through this myself just a cpl. months ago.those little clips at the plug end are a bi@#h sometimes also.if you break a clip,(you'll also need a couple new ones also)go to you're local dealership they have 'em at the parts cntr.i tried all over town to match up the electrical clip but no one had even seen such a bird!
