Finished vintage air install

I have finished the a/c install and everything works, but when the compressor kicks on it almost kills the engine. Does it need more timing or increase the idle rpm on the carb. I have adjusted the carb idle speed but it is turning right around 1000 to 1100 rpm in order to keep it running. What's the deal? Any info well help.

They make a solenoid that hooks to carb linkage...when compressor kicks in, it does too and increases idle speed by pushing on the linkage (slightly opening throttle). You don't say what kind of a carb you have...but I imagine with a little hunting around you can find one and make it work...they were stock on mid 80's trucks and are adjustable by turning in or out the plunger.

WESTO is correct. Might suggest you go to your local pick a part junk yard, and find one. Even if it does not work, what you will get is the bracket it mounts to, and the wiring connector. Then if it is bad go to your local parts store and give them the application for the car/truck you got it off of.

Something is funky. My truck idles at 800rpm in drive and with the A/C on the truck idles just fine. I have an edelbrock 1406 and I bump the idle speed up a hair in the summer for both the hot weather and A/C, but it still idles fine at about 800 with the A/C on.

Did you have the system professionally evacuated and filled?

Do you have a Q-jet? Maybe they can't handle the A/C like the others posted and need the adjuster?

When I put air in my 74 blazer years ago I has r124a put it. It was when r134 was new and r-12 was going out. Well I had the system charged up (by a pro) and it really bogger down the engine. Well it barley lasted the summer the truck ran hot. Then the system failed. Well come to find out the system was chargeg up at too high of pressure. Once I relaced the broken parts and charged correctly it was great.

Thanks for all the input, I have an edelbrock 600(1406) I idled it up and it still seemed to bog down, I checked the vacum and had a leak, fixed the leak and idled it back down runs great now, again thanks for the input.

have another issue with the air, At around 3k rpm on the highway the condensor starts to howl, are the condensors only designed for so many rpm? If so i guess i'll get a bigger condensor pulley. what do ya'll think?

does the vintage air have the old style compressor (the A6?). If so, my original factory compressor doesn't hardly make any noise at all. You really can't tell when it's on, as the engine and wind noise are louder at all speeds, and I have 4.11's, too.

But if it's a newer style compressor maybe those are louder at high speeds? Can you hear it easily at idle, too, and louder at 3K rpm's?

It should have come with a Sanderson Compressor. I've never "heard" mine running.

Yeah, the rotary design of the sanderson compressors should be quieter than the old style (67-72)piston compressors.

Got stethoscope? Maybe describe the noise?

Well, took her down to the shop where I bought the unit and had them look at it, test the pressure, call vintage air, and they finally conceded that it is the clutch in the compressor. They have a new one on order and will put it in on Monday. Vintage said that the more you drive the better the break in on the compressor will be, LOL. That is the first I have heard of that, anyone else hear of that. Have any of you ever had and issue with a brand new sanden compressor or vintage air, maybe i am the one in a million.

Sorry, mines been great since new. Stuff happens though!!! I bought a brand new weed eater on sunday and realized yesterday that it had a giant crack going across the whole top of the motor They gave me a new one today.

I remember from somewhere when you break in a new compressor you have to turn the a/c on and off about 30 times to sit the clutch or something. On for 5 seconds off for 5 seconds while the engine is running. Helps it grab more
