Types Of Axle

I just bought a 67 chevy c20 and a 69 k20. Both appear to have the same rear axle. What are they. They look like a beefed up version of a 9inch. Are they any good? What problems do people have with them? Thanks for the advice.

Re: Types Of Axle

Its an Eaton H052 axle. Really strong and dependable if maintained right.

Do a search on "Eaton H052" to get plenty of informative threads. The best are in the "Engine & Drivetrain" section.

Re: Types Of Axle

They are a solid heavy duty piece, with two minor flaws.

First is in gear ratio choice.....not much. The highest, most street friendly gear is 4.10. Depending upon tire size and intended use, it may not be a big deal to you.

Second is in brake parts. They can be difficult to find.....and if you do, it may not be a "local" thing. You may have to do some internet searching.

Re: Types Of Axle

Napa had every brake part I needed. The only thing I had to search to find were 32 wheel studs. It seemed like I was cleaning out the reserves of a few sources.I totally rebuilt both front and rear axles on a`72 K/20 including brake drums.
I have one I`ll be using with a Dana60 front axle in place of the 14-bolt.I`m going with disc brakes on that one. They are great for 4wds because they`re as strong as you`ll need with less bulk and weight.I`d never own a 4wd with taller gears than 4.10s.
The 14-bolt is the next great GM rear axle that can`t be beat. Many swap to them with a bit of mount modification.I`d just like those who do to have the wherewithall to save the HO52s for parts for those of us who believe in these axles.I fear the day when I truly can`y feasibly run one anymore. They are a dream to work on with the drop-out diff as well as a pretty quick change of ratios if so desired. If you find a No-Spin (Detroit Locker) it`s a simple bolt-in swap if the ratio is the same.

Thanks for the help. I run a 14b in my cherokee and I have never had any problems except its size. I was curious to see how many of you guys like them. Thanks again

I love'em too. But you can't get the drums for a 1971 3/4T 4x4 though. But if you would switch the backing plate in this case to a 2WD 3/4T or a 72 3/4T 4x4 you should be good to go.

Re: Types Of Axle

Yeah Roger, you`re right.I remember that now.It was in the`80s that I needed drums for my`71 K/20 and I couldn`t find them.I came up with this fantastic place called Parts Jobbers that would find it if it was anywhere out there. They found my pair and told me they were 2 of the last 9 out there. They are one year only and different from 2wd.Taller and narrower.
Swapping brakes on these full-floaters is easy.I had a hard time getting the right rear brake parts for my`72 GMC K2500 with a Dana60.We finally figured out the truck had 2wd brakes from the plates out.GM did that at the factory. This truck is all original. They must have run short on parts. As long as the brakes came off a leaf spring truck it can be done.

Re: Types Of Axle

I forgot it was a closed knuckle. So how do i convert this type? Or just switch it out with an open knuckle?

Question Re: Types Of Axle

i believe a boardmember (blackbird customs?) was making a disc conversion for the closed knuckle 44s.
