Fuel filter replacement confusion

So, I ordered a new fuel filter to replace the old one in my 53. As far as I can tell, the old one was possibly original, and had never been replaced. At the very least, I'm confused because the recommended replacement I got doesn't seem to fit the same, and I just want confirmation on whether or not I'm coming at this right.

Attached are two pics, one of the original, one of the new one. Note how the original sort of sits at the top of the glass bowl and hangs right on the edge. Then the new one just sort of falls in to the bowl. I just wasn't sure if that's how it's actually supposed to be.

One thing that I can do is put the gasket on around the new filter before setting it into the bowl. That holds the filter up, but I'm not sure if it'll actually seal if I do that, and hence don't know if that'd be right or not, just an observation.

Its been a while since I change one of those but I think there should have been a spring under the filter to hold it up

You think that's all it'd need? I'm sure I could scrounge one up to stick up underneath it at the auto store I bet.

That and the 5 psi from the pump would keep it in place

I emailed Classic Parts about this issue, and they were pleasant enough to explain exactly how this works out. The fuel filter basically slides into place over the center tube of the filter assembly that originally went through the center of the metal piece. You can't really see it, but you can feel it there, and the new filter's center hole will hold it on fairly snugly, no spring or anything needed. Hopefully that makes sense.
