Got My '63 GMC Today!

It arrived here in Ohio from Colorado today. 1963 GMC 3/4 ton longbed fleetside with a 305E (with plaid valve covers) and 4 speed. bought the truck for $500 and my buddy and I paid $1750 to have 2 trucks shipped. The other truck on the trailer is the truck he bought for his wife. Both trucks belonged to his uncle.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!

Very cool! Congratulations...I know how difficult it can be to find a GMC worth building. I was originally hunting for a '63 GMC 1/2-ton before settling for the Chevy in my sig (and I'm still shoe horning a Poncho in it).

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!

Thanks!

First plan is to get it running (good). I'm keeping the motor in it but I am going to upgrade the carb and distributer. Second plan is to get it to lay frame, probably use a complete ***************** setup. I really like the natural patina so I will probably wait a couple of years to fix up the body.

Yes. The plaid valve covers are from the factory and were installed on 1963 GMC V-6's. But there is no definite info on exactly how many trucks came with them that year. Very few are seen anymore.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!

So is that whole giant orange part on the front of the engine the water pump or is it the timing cover and pump combined and I just can't see the split between the two ?

Kevin,
You can see the split in this picture and here is a cut away shot.

Talking Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!

Thanks guys. 63 seems to be the perfect model year for me. Last year of the wrap-around windshield, first year for front coil suspension and as far as I know the only year for the plaid valve covers.

Unfortunately I have to store the truck in my buddy's barn so I have to drive 20 minutes to do any kind of tinkering. Don't think it will keep me from it though.

Has anyone used a Pertronix "Ignitor" distributer conversion kit on a 305 V6? I know a guy who swears by them and it sounds pretty simple to install and it's much cheaper than an HEI conversion.

Nah, I'll be switching to 5x5 lugs and front discs when I do the air ride. Better selectoin of wheel too.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!

Here's the stock (I think) setup...

This is the plastic spacer stuck to the manifold...

The adapter plate bolted to the manifold...

and the Holley installed and plumbed...

and the throttle return spring mount kit...

I had to get longer bolts to mount the adapter to the manifold because of the spacer and 1 longer bolt for the front driver's side carb mount to attach the sring mount.

Man, I really need to clean that motor up some!
