6 Volt Starter Help

Can one of you guy's direct me to thread about how to check a 6 volt starter
for problems ? It worked fine when the 50 GMC was parked about 10 years ago, but now it will do nothing. I pulled it out this morning, power washed all the gunk off of it and would like to start looking a little further at it this afternoon after I watch all the races on TV today ! Nascar @ Indy, F1 from Hungary & Indy cars from Canada.......Thanks

Check for stuck brushes and grounds between starter and engine and engine to frame.

Re: 6 Volt Starter Help

It doesn't take a lot of effort to take the starter apart and check it out. Brushes are only a few bucks and the end bushings aren't expensive at all.

You should be able to pick up the parts at the local NAPA
http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPage...=11&SubCatId=4

That list is for a 53 but You can plug in the year you have and make sure of the numbers.

Re: 6 Volt Starter Help

Thanks for the advise, I pulled the inspection ring off the starter yesterday to look inside and boy was I surprised I found a bazillllllllllllion dead and rotted bugs inside, never saw that before. I do believe that they killed my starter, bur juice and guts don't do electrical connections any good do they? What are my options at this point? The starter has the manual push button type solinoid on it, the gear looks great and I think the bearings are good too.I need to just get the motor to start to see what else is going to need work. The truck has not moved in over 10 years........Thanks agin for the help as usual.
