Re: for those who are running a 383 stroker

Mine dyno'd at 400+ horsepower, but what I like is the 440 foot lbs of torque. I bought mine as a crate motor. It has some vortec heads, 9.5 to 1 compression and flat tappet cam.

I am considering doing the same. Are you building your own short block if so what kind of crank, rods, and pistons are you using? Are you using a roller or flat tappet cam? Heads? Intake? FI or Carb?

Re: for those who are running a 383 stroker

Eagle 4340 forged crank
Crower 5.7 stroker sportsman rods
Arias 8:1 blower pistons
Isky hyd blower cam
World Sportsman II heads
Weiand 671
BDS 8 nozzle electronic bug catcher controlled by FAST ecu
No numbers on this yet, but even before the blower, had a good seat of the pants feel and is driven daily on pump gas. Without the blower, and with 10:1 pistons, same heads, Comp Cams 292H series flat tappet cam, Edelbrock Performer Intake, and 750 holley, she chassis dynoed at 426 HP AND 456 TQ.

Re: for those who are running a 383 stroker

I bet you will see somewhere in the neighborhood of 600hp from that motor...

For the money you'll spend on the retro rollers for the cam, you could get a vortec builder that's already setup for a roller valvetrain, IMO.

Re: for those who are running a 383 stroker

^^^Agreed. I wish I would have done that with my 383 instead of spending the money converting the older block.

Not that I'm disagreeing, but I’m curious as to what you meant. Stock vortec heads run more flow then P/P 202 cast heads. Now I know you can buy heads like Dart’s but you’ll also spend two to three times as much money. So is that what you meant?

As for your question, I also bought a create engine. It’s the 383 stroker from Blueprint engines (Marshal engines built it). Dynoed at the crank 405hp 440tq. I have to say that I’m way pleased with it so far. I still haven’t tuned the carburetor yet so it has an issue when you first hit it. But from 1500 rmps to 5500 it’s putting a hurtin on that ape!

I've seen Vortec heads support 600hp on a 406 SBC with a little bowl smoothing work. Vortec heads are pretty much the best out of the box heads you can buy. It's not all about flow unless you're running massive cubes or turning over 6500 RPM. The 170cc Runners and the 1.94/1.6 valves flow plenty. The big power is created in the runner velocity and swirl properties. Over heading an engine is worse than over camming it. Err on the side of caution and always go with a smaller head than you think you need, you can always have a little taken off, you can't put it back on so easily.

They're telling you that because Eagle Rotating assemblies are expensive. Much more so than Scats Nodular iron set. Scat makes great cranks, the fillet radius is just as much as anyone elses and the ductile iron will take a beating and keep on going since it will flex and absorb the impact a lot better than the Forged Steel cranks will. The drag teams use the Forged cranks because they're running 14:1 or more compression with blowers and methanol injection systems, they need the stiffer Forged cranks. The thing you don't see is them pulling those forged cranks and scrapping them after 2 or 3 competitions cuz they're cracked. If you're smart, you'll run Scat on a street engine and leave the forged stuff to the blown or NOx injected engines, cuz you're just throwing $1500 into something you don't need, money that could be spent elsewhere, like creating another 50hp. Just a little friendly advice from an old 2wd Modified pulling truck and dirt track car engine builder.

Re: for those who are running a 383 stroker

^^^And in my experience Scat has much better quality finish work than Eagle does. I've seen eagle rods & cranks that needed a ton of cleanup work right out of the box, scat stuff never has that problem. I run a scat crank/rods in my 383 and scat rods in my nitrous fed 370ci LSx.
