The "SAD DAY" has finally come....She's Gone... ;(

Today I said goodbye to my baby....not my wife or kids...but my the truck !!

"The Chief" to most of you..."Rock-a-Billy" to my kids, wife and everyone else around me.

Let me tell this WAS EXTREMELY hard for me to do....I must have a real attachment to vehicles...Thought I would not do it again, but I did it for my family....

It leaves with a kinda cool story.

Turns out this kid (18-22 tops) has been lurking around on our site here for a while...and watched my "Low-Budget" build from the start. He said he loved the truck, and watching the build.

So when it turned up on Craigslist, he couldn't believe his eyes !!

He came down the other day to check it out...and instantly fell in love, like a first kiss/love in highschool.

He asks if he could drive it...I said sure. Then he says "Can you back it out for me?" I was like Oh..no first bad sign !

It was a tite space, so I did, and pulled it to the curb. I explained to him about the close-ratio Muncie and super-tite throw on the shifter (1st and 3rd are super close).

So...he takes off (in 3rd) riding the clutch for days...so much so, you could see white smoke coming from under the truck !!

(Second bad sign, BTW)

About 5 minutes later, he calls my phone and says "Hey man, I don't think the clutch pedal is working anymore ??"

I was like "WTF did you do to my truck ?!?!" (No I didn't really, but I went to the rescue).

So I got in, and threw it in first and hit the starter....Cool we still have the clutch !!

The linkage had came off....WHAT A SIGN THAT WAS !!! Turns out, the spring that holds the clutch rod tite up against the throw-out rod broke some time the night before and was laying on the shop floor !!!

Now, if this doesn't mean the truck was saying "PLEASE, PLEASE DONT SELL ME!!!"...I dont know what does !!!
-
-
Here's the spring:
-
-

-
-
So I was like..."So much for the sale, huh ?" (YES !!!)

But he was so 'juiced' he said I be back tomorrow with 50 $100 bills !!!

So today, I repaired the linkage...and got it going.

Jacked it up....
-
-

-
-
...and yes used a stand. BTW, check out the crossmember..still hold'n up...even after that "Wreckless Burn-Out" !!!
-
-

-
-
I had to straighten the rod, and make a new end. The rod was smack'n the ground, and the end was gone. (sorry, crappy pic..I was nervous)
-
-

-

-

-
-
Man...did I LOOOVEE those wide whites !!!!!
-
-

-
-

-
-
Here's the kid throwing in the paper-work (Almost forgot...I lost the pink..FINAL SIGN!!!)
-

Funny you said that...my wife told me the same thing.

She called me and felt so bad for me....deep down, she really liked that truck.

Around the guys she was like "I'll never drive that thing!"

But when it came time to cruise, she was in it with two other girls...and I was stuck in a 4-door Caddy !!

HOPE YOU ALL ENJOYED MY FAREWELL STORY !!!

seems like you will get to work on it still. He will be calling you for a new clutch soon I guess. sorry you had to sell it. I don't think i could ever sell mine. I would get rid of my Ranger before my 65. but don't quote me on that.

I know John, you've told me that many times before...but I didn't get a nice pad from my folks either....You gotta do what you gotta due !!! I have to do whats best for my growing kids....they need a bigger home !!!

I think my reasoning behind the whole thing is right !!!

Like I said...I have the resources and skills to build something 'bigger' 'stronger' 'faster' kinda like Lee Majors...

Let's hope it doesn't end up to be "The six million dollar Truck"

Glad you got your asking price, but sad to see you have to sell your baby!

John, I feel your pain. When I was newly married I remember selling a 68 RS Camaro to a young man who had a big wad of bills and a grin that would not scrub off. But every time I saw my old car around town it pulled at my heart. I sold a 71 El Camino because my daughters car seats would not fit between the buckets. But I have had a lot of fun cars since and would not change a thing!!

That's a hard thing to do.....sell something you've put so much of yourself into. But it sounds like you did the right thing for the family. Like was already said "bigger and better the next time"

Re: The "SAD DAY" has finally come....She's Gone... ;(

Cool man...I appreciate it.

Now I just need to find the right house. We have to be out of the current place in a couple weeks....finishing up a few things that were found on the 'health & safety' report...nothing big.

Being that I do door installs too, I have a $hit load of construction tools as well.

Looking for a home with a HUGE yard, with RV access to the back.....I always wanted to build one of those 'Jesse James' style metal swing gates...

Wife says "NO WAY !!!" (no that I sold my truck, I have some ammo)

We'll leave this for a new post someday in 'General'

Well. Cool and a bummer all at once..
You'll be happy knowing it helps the family, and theres always another one around the corner.

My 63 Burb has 23hrs left and its likely going too.

I sold my wife's little 61 Scotty camper to pay bills, and then later found a nicer, slightly bigger 61 Yellowstone that she loves.

So I put a deposit on the camper, that I cant pay for...haha
So the burb gotta go and she'll be happy, and I'll buy another one to play with...
Such is the circle of cars for me...

John,

You did the right thing and are a better man for it. Your wife and kids will appreciate it when they are in their house. You have great skills and will easily be able to build another when the time is right!
