1970 k20 suburban - should I buy it
I am looking to buy a 1970 3/4 ton GMC suburban. It's pretty well optioned, but it is rusty. The windshield area is rusty, along with the rockers and bottoms of the doors. The floors and frame and pretty nice.
It is a 350/ th350 4x4. Has tow hooks, aux battery, Aftermarket under dash AC and rear AC/fan, 2nd row, dual tanks, power steering, no-spin eaton rear, radio delete plate, and cruise. Haven't heard it run, but was told it ran when parked. It would need brakes. it is complete, but the plan is to part it, or sell it whole (with a Chevy front clip) I would be keeping the front end for my blazer and some of the other parts. The rest though, would be sold. Do you think it's worth the $600 purchase price? I am pretty sure i am getting it, but just wanted to make sure I can get my money back. Thanks pictures coming.

With out knowing the running-driving condition i wouldn't pay any more probably. I don't think you will loose at $600. the towhooks and front lockouts are worth a few bucks alone. Plus if you get some parts for yourself...
How long has it been sitting?

Re: 1970 k20 suburban - should I buy it
it's been sitting a couple years, but was only recently moved to that spot when the current owner got it. It rolled then, but he never tried to start it, or do anything with it.
I am probably going to remove the front end, motor/trans/transfercase, fuel tanks, tow hooks, aux battery tray and bumpers for myself. At that point I will probably offer it up as a roller if anyone wanted it (would still have complete interior, axles, nice frame, and glass. ) There is a title for the truck, but it lists it as a 73, but with the right VIN number. That would go with the body/frame. Should be able to get it back to being listed as a 70 again. If anyone needs anything, let me know, as I am hopefully picking it up later. Thanks.

Re: 1970 k20 suburban - should I buy it
since new york doesn't require a title, i would not even bother including it when you sell of the parts. a bill of sale is all thats needed and a typo like that on the title could cause all kinds of hell if someone in another state tried to title it.
I personally don't see how you could not make money on that. Any clue wtf that fire alarm bell is for???? Last edited by Longhorn Man; 08-30-2009 at 05:44 PM. |

Got it home tonight. No clue what the bell is for yet. will be looking at it later. If someone wanted to buy this as a roller with a chevy front, let me know.

Re: 1970 k20 suburban - should I buy it
you might make a little bit of money on it, but you are keeping everything on it that would have made you quite a bit which is understandable, as I would do probably the same. It hurts that the burb was so rusty. It definitely hurts the resale value of sheetmetal, but you should do alright with the glass, frame, and interior. Was it a good deal for you to buy it for $600, yes. Trevor

Re: 1970 k20 suburban - should I buy it
Well, of what I am keeping, the front sheet metal is what I really wanted. The rest i would only be keeping to sell again, and wouldn't be included if it were a roller. As for the sheet metal, the outside looks rough, but the inside metal, around the rear floor and wheel wells is pretty solid. The front doors may be solid enough too, although they have speaker holes cut in them.
In the end, everything is for sale. Once I inventory it, I will be making a post with what is for sale. And you could put this one back together. I have a line on another roof panel (and another suburban for parts) but I don't have the space to work on this one, otherwise it would be my tow vehicle.

That bell may have been his car alarm, loud and obnoxious!
That is a great chassis, to bad you could not find a nice body to swap onto it. |

Re: 1970 k20 suburban - should I buy it
i like your tow vehicle....90's burb with late model rims....very sweet. only vehicle that should pull a burb....another burb! thats how my dad unloaded his 84....pulled it to the junk yard with his 87. i met a guy with a 41 burb that uses it to haul the original 35 prototype. it is interesting to see a 1/2 ton pulling a 3/4 ton in your case!
