Trac bar differences?
I'm swapping out the corporate HO52 in my '67 C20 for a Dana 60 from a '71 or '72. I got the trac bar that came with the Dana but it seems to be about an inch short and the angles that the rod ends seems to be wrong.
Were the frame mounts for the trac bars different for different years? I don't want to force this trac bar to fit, it would give the suspension quite a bit of preload. |

Ran into the same thing here -we swapped out the Eaton in our 71 C20 with a Dana from a 1972 Suburban C20. We thought we had and likely got the track bar froum the suburban, but it was too short and the original was way too long.
We ended up cutting off one round end of of the orginal bar, and after some very careful measument, cut the origanal bar at an angle, ground a curve to match the round part and welding the end back on. I am glad (sort of) that you have the same issue, means we are not totally stupid. I looked at adjustable bars but that would not solve the angle problem. I think the frame mount must be different if you have a Dana, only thing I can figure out. Looks like a homemade bar is the fix for this. The end we rewelded back on was the one the connects to the rear end. We have the box off right now, I might be able to get a pic or two and post them up later tonight if that would help.

Interesting. I'm thinking about an inch extension and about a 5 or 10 degree bend in the rod will solve it. Maybe I'll try that this weekend...

My big block 72 /20 burb came with the whole suspention from a big block C/10 burb.
The panhard bar had thrashed bushings, so I took the one from the 1/2 ton parts pile, (the C/20had a dana, the C/10had a 12 bolt) and it bolted right into place... no problem whatsoever. Then, when I bolted the 12 bolt in place, it didn't want to fit. I honestly don't even remember what I did. |

The swap went well. The axle bolted in no problem, the parking brake and hydraulic hose fit just fine, the only issue has been this trac bar. I have it in, but the ends don't line up properly. I'm going to put about a 5 degree bend in it next weekend to see in that makes it fit better.
I have been driving it and it is sooooo much better being at 2800rpm at 65 instead of 3500rpm! |
