Lets design a console.
I am in need of a console that sits on the hump of my truck. Requirements are
1 looks period, or period like 2 doesn’t slide around 3 holds a soda can, bottle, or super soda bucket size drink that can be reached w/o bending over to much 4 contains a hidden radio, with speakers on the sides (my truck only has am, I like it, but I also want to hear fm and my ipod, so a stand alone system would be perfect) 5 must be easy to remove 6? Not sure, anyone have more idea? Just starting to think about this. what have you guys done?

Re: Lets designee a console.
I got a console [and bucket seats] out of a mid '80s Jimmy [full size]. The Next Gen console has square holes in front that would hold a beer or coke can. [Instead of slots for cigarette hardpacks.]
The lid is slightly shorter that the '69-'72 version, but has provision fo a keyed lock. It's about the same size as the early one, but I haven't pulled the original one from my '71 Jimmy to check for size, fit, boltholes, etc. The consoles from a mid-'80s or late '70s K/5 should be easier to find at junkyards -- I got my seats and console for about $130 -- and you don't have to worry about ruining some vintage piece if you want to cut speaker holes in the sides. There is enough space inside for a Radio AM/FM-Cassette, Amp, Scanner, CB, gloves, and maybe a box of raisins. JK. My stuff is Burgundy, my least fave color, but that's why God invented Krylon.

Re: Lets designee a console.
If you wont period, try something with a camel mount. The first car I had was a Comet It had a CB mount with a 8 track mounted on the hump just in front of the floor shifter. It was big enough to have a storage compartment fabed under the radio mount. There easy to work with if you can find one like my old one that could be modded enclose the back mount the speakers break some metal and make you're cup holder and storage shelf/space. That was one thing that was available back then. I'm going to google around and see if I can find a example of what I'm talking about.

Re: Lets designee a console.
I can't find what I'm looking for, this thing was tall enough to do what you're looking for but it's not a console and would need some fabbing, ever consider a overhead shelf?

Re: Lets designee a console.
When I get to the interior I'm planing on filling in the factory speaker grill and install two, one on ether side of my dash. I'm thinking on taking a old under dash mount radio removing the face plate and installing a second ashtray, in one I'll have my phone and ipod and in the other I'd like to have a cup holder.
If you did something like this you wouldn't loose as much cab space. Last edited by R.L.; 09-15-2009 at 02:35 PM. |

Re: Lets designee a console.
This is the one I built when I had my bench seat in my 67. Nothin fancy just 3/4 plywood for the frame did hold a 12" sub inside. The top was oak with a flip up lid and cup holders.

Re: Lets design a console.
Probably not exactly what you're looking for,but here is what I did. This is a picture of the unfinished version. I cut out 2 hole in the flat part for cupholders, then covered the whole thing with fiberglass cloth/resin and smoothed it up and painted it black.I wouldn't think speakers on each side of the console would work too good,as you would only here half the sound no matter which side you were sitting on.

Re: Lets design a console.
Here are some pics of it finished. I didn't cover it,just smoothed it up and painted it satin black. I thought the clock and thermometer had a retro look

Re: Lets design a console.
Why not go up? This is a custom moulded over-mount unit. When removed there is no signs of install or damage.
It holds two 6" 2-way speakers and can easily hold an iPod mount or even hide a radio deck. |
