Junkyard/cash for clunkers
Hit a local yard today that was rumored to be getting majority of the clunker cars in the area and oh my god, what a shame. No less than 10 rows of around 15-20 chevy trucks/ suvs per row. I was like a kid in a candy store. Got the rest of the serpentine parts to convert the 87, a 4.3 air intake for the 92 blazer, a 1998 grill for the blazer, and lots of small interior/ detail parts. Heading back down there later with my dad to pull fi harnesses and fuel lines from a pair of 87 trucks and possibly a few sets of seats. It was really a shame to see the cars out there. There was even a 2001 extended cab 2wd chevy that was a clunker car.

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
went to my local upullit last week, watching an 89 burb in great shape (no power mirrors ), but complete. It's in the "holding" lot right now, might grab the front clip and doors, no dents! Just to hang on to them.
Never know. Although my wife might not like turning our back yard into a junkyard.

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
Went to my local yard today and snagged a nice tinted sliding back window out of an 86 cash 4 clunkers chevy c20...... diesel in mint condition considering it is a New England truck. I could not bring myself to send off a mint square body diesel to the scrap!

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
Yo! I'm just glad to hear that some of those clunker parts are being used, rather than destroyed!! I was under the impression that all of those vehicles were crushed and shredded after only a minor amount of parts salvage,...
Sad to lose those vehicles and their parts, though! They'll be sorely missed in 20-30 more years. A lot of energy went into producing them, and more energy goes into scrapping them,...particularly unfortunate considering their early demise. Todd.

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
Todd you are truly right. I myself work at a GM dealership an the new motto in the auto industry is a vehicle shouldn't last more than a decade nowadays!!!! If they do that means that there is no turnover in the industry so the days of vehicle lasting 20-30 years are far from gone!!! We have 22 fullsize chevys from 99-03 traded in for the clunker program, over 40 Dodges, and 52 s10 blazers, some were rough but some were good reliable vehicles people owed with no debt, now they drive KIAs an Hyundais that need a complete brake job at 22k!!!!!!!!!!! People wonder where America's spirit an money have gone, OVERSEAS!!!!! Makes a former Marine like myself sick to my stomach!!!

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
Repos will skyrocket in a year and those folks wont be able to find a decent car for 3 or 4 grand cause they junked them all. All it did was help jump start foreign economies and screw the lower middle class in this country.

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
Yo!
Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug,... rockn30809, I think you did PERFECT! You helped to salvage some of the parts that would otherwise go to scrap. My FRANKENTRUCK is built from a huge number of junkyard parts. That's why my wife named it FRANKENTRUCK,...a truck, a donor truck, junkyard and new. Why remake what has already been made?! Remember the word recycle? Todd.

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
Yo! Geeze! Sorry to hear that! I'd bet that about 5-10% of FRANKENTRUCK came from the junkyard in Greeley. There's about 20 '73 to '87 trucks there still. Picked over, yeah,...some cut up,...no power trains,...but there's still lots of small parts there.
And the existing trucks gave me examples to get ideas from, gain measurements from, etc,... Bummer that it's unavailable to you mainermikeyd! Todd.

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
Someone turned in a 90 454SS here. Its in the local pick a part. I need to go see if there is anything left of it...
Stopped at a yard friday with lots of squarebodys and he said hes not allowed to sell any parts due to them being clunker trade ins. I told him it was only engines he couldnt sell, but he didnt care. Thats whats sad, he has lots of good cars with clean sheet metal from what I could see....

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
Man, it is a real shame they had to destroy those engines. Was the '90 SS turned in as a clunker? If so, I really hate to see that 454 C.I destroyed. Back in '90 a guy here bought two of the 1990 454 SS Trucks and would not even drive them home. He had a roll back bring them to his house. Then he stored them in his garage. Guess he thought they would really increase in value down the line. ??

Man if I was home in Hobe Sound I would be set. The selection here in Fresno went from several 73-87's too now there were maybe 4 and the rest were all 90's.

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
I went to a junkyard looking for a transmission dipstick for my TH350 and got a "Well, I don't reckon we carry anythin' that old"
The only junkyard with vehicles that are older than 94 is owned by a die-hard Ford owner, he has two squares that are pretty much picked over. Oh well, the one thing I did buy from a junkyard turned out to be a piece of junk, It's sometimes better to buy new I suppose.

Re: Junkyard/cash for clunkers
I work at a chevy dealership so I saw all the cars and trucks being turned it. It was crazy! Then I had to kill the motors on all of them. I thought it was gonna be fun blowin up the motors but it just sucked. I don't know how many good running k motors I blew up. Plus we were forbidden to take ANYTHING off of them at all.
