Engine Swap - truck will not shut off
so i just finished up my first ever engine swap yesterday and started it for the first time!! very exciting - everything went well - except i went to shut the truck off and nothing happened it kept running...
the switch worked fine before - it still could be bad i know! - but im wondering if it is related to my alternator upgrade. i switched to an internally regulated one from a newer truck and got the kit from lmc to connect it. it was just a 4 inch cable with the 2 correct plastic plugs to switch it - and a terminator block for the connection to the old regulator. anyone else seen this problem? or probably just bad switch? BEFORE AFTER

Re: Engine Swap - truck will not shut off
I would guess bad switch, never heard of alternators doing this. I've never done a carb to carb switch though, usually prefer to go EFI so I'm not sure.

Re: Engine Swap - truck will not shut off
did you change any of the wiring going to or from the starter solenoid and the coil? I had mine wired up wrong and it did exactly what you are talking about......

Re: Engine Swap - truck will not shut off
well i did change to electronic ignition...... and i just realized why this happened!! - i wasn't getting power from the unfused ignition spot in the fuse block so i connected a power wire direct to the battery for the coil - DUH - i feel like a dope! you can see the red wire along the loom just kind of stuffed in it connects direct to the battery -

Re: Engine Swap - truck will not shut off
Hey could you give me a detailed way that you fix this problem? I just posted this into a new forum but think it might be the same thing? Thanks!
Hey guys, I recently bought a 68 c20 custom camper 350. The guy that I bought it from was in the process of wiring in a new Painless Wiring harness (Item # 10206 if you search for it) and didnt finish everything. It looks like for the most part everything he did is good. The only think that I have found (And it is driving me NUTS) is that the ignition must me messed up. It turns over PERFECT, no problems. When I go to turn off the engine though, it will not turn off and I have to pull the switch that runs directly to the Cap and Rotor (Spark plugs). Any ideas as to what he did wrong? Diagrams or color coded wires to look for helps- I dont know much about wiring |

Re: Engine Swap - truck will not shut off
Yes the alternator is connected to the distributor power meaning it will charge normally but will not shut off as it keeps energizing the distributor because it's past the ignition switch and engine is turning over. To fix this find your charge wire that is connected to the distributor power source and move it over to the battery terminal or junction box.

Re: Engine Swap - truck will not shut off
@69 chevy lwb so I found the diagram and am still lost.. I think i have found the wire but i was hoping there was any chance I could get you to go above and beyond and circle the pont that I need to rewire to the terminal (In paint or Photoshop?) ? I will probably blow something up knowing my lack of knowledge with wiring haha. Thanks for your help! Here is a link to the diagram pdf (http://static.summitracing.com/globa...0510manual.pdf)

Re: Engine Swap - truck will not shut off
The next time you run the engine and it won't shut off with the key. Pull the small plug on the alternator. If the engine dies you have one of two possibilities.
The alternator is bad or you have the two wires in the plug reversed. It would be nice to know what was done to the charging system I.E. alternator upgrade, regulator jumpered, Gauge dash or idiot light dash.
