Do ya think this will work

I am going to have a gas fill spot, hole in my metal bed, what I'm asking is those things they sell at the parts stores that replaced the round filler doors they are chrome and some are stainless steel. If the bottom can be trimed to fit my metal ribs. but do ya think it will work?

How about a picture or a link to what you are talking about? That would help a bunch.

Re: Do ya think this will work

I think I know what you are talking about....., the chrome aftermarket gas doors or billit doors.

Is this right??

Almost anything can be made to fit, it just depends on how much work you are willing to do to get it there.

Those are what I'm talking about. If I trimmed the under side to fit the metal bed.

Re: Do ya think this will work

I am sure that they can work, but you would have to find the one that will work best for your application. The ridges in the bed are pretty deep (3/16"??) so it will have to have a big enough collar to take that much out and still not break or discolor when you do it.
Summit Racing has a good selection with different specs and also has some universal ones that might work for you. Also check with some of the board vendors, they might have one for you that is a drop in unit.

gmcdude-
i am in the same situation as you are. just relocated my fuel tank under the bed and am working on getting a bed put in. one of the things i have been looking into is a billet gas door in the bed. i found this on a post the other day. hope it helps. not sure if it'll work, but let me know what you end up doing. would love to see pics.

Re: Do ya think this will work

Question... what if you have a load of... something... and you have to get gas?
Are you going to unload and reload it all at the gas station to get some gas?
Why not do the filler neck behind the side marker?
Or even in the wheel well?

Re: Do ya think this will work

I just used a Marine fuel filler on my 72' and used a hole saw to open up the bed so the filler would sit flush (or close anyway) and then just welded in a piece of sheet metal to support it. (Check my build thread to see the full story and pics) You do have to plan ahead a little if you have a load in the bed and need fuel.
