Interesting Crash Test
Someone showed me this the other day and though it comes as no surprise, it's pretty interesting to see. Quite often we complain about how they just don't make em like they used to! Hard to argue with the safety engineering in newer vehicles......probably best to avoid any head-on collisions in these old trucks!
This other one is just for fun.......saw this awhile back and was amazed how well these little match box Smart Cars held up.....even though the driver wouldn't have been so lucky!

^ 50 years of dirt.
Sorry, this test was rigged knowing the GM X-Frame was weak in an off set crash. A ladder-frame car would do much better. This is just a glorified publicity stunt by the ever unscientific IIHS Last edited by texanidiot25; 10-07-2009 at 01:35 AM. |

I saw the smart car crash too, it's like throwing a styrofoam cup against a brick wall, the cup doesn't get damaged much but, what happens when a smart car gets sandwiched between two vehicles??????? back to the styrofoam cup analogy.

Re: Interesting Crash Test
The frame is designed to flex over bumps, so knowing this, they knew it would give way easy in a wreck, leaving just some sheet metal and thin a-pillars to stop a car. Which of course, didn't.
Not to mention the IIHS has little to do with many safety innovations over the years. They just like to act like they do things. Mind you, it's ran by the insurance companies. |

Re: Interesting Crash Test
Why do people have such a hard time admitting that new cars are safer?I'll be first to admit that old cars are way cooler, but if I had to choose between an old car and a new car in a head on collision,I'd take my chances in a new car.

Re: Interesting Crash Test
Because the test was stupid and utterly irrelevant. A waste of a good surviving car. Of course a car that's designed to be safe is safer. The old Bel Air wasn't built with safety in mind.
