develpong a bad ping in the rearend when shifting into rev..all the ujoints are new, so it must be something inside.

Have you removed the drive shaft and checked for a binding u joint? Also check u joint straps to make sure they are tight. Also did the noise start after u joint install?

its a sound i have had for a while. everything is tight, the sound is coming from the rear end.

but, ill recheck everything

well, thats an odd thing for a low mile truck, but that is what i was thinking too.

what is involved in converting it to a posi? is it possible? w/o changing the whole thing.

you need posi carrier ring and pinion of your choice bearings seals install jit and labor to do it(recomen pro shop) total is typically about $1200

well, the rear end guy says its probably in the trany.. the trany guy says, ya, it probably is... the trany needs a kit and some seals anyway...and, the torque converter may be my towing problem. guess we will see.
Would be nice to put a posi in it…sometime I will

Dave I wqould pull the cover and take a looksee. The pinion backlash looks excessive to me. Plus it kind of has a double clunk.

Good show. Like John says , pull the cover & see what you have. It probably has a lot of slop in the spider gears. Make sure the pin that goes through them is snug in the case. Check the carrier brgs. There should be no side to side movement in the carrier assembly. There should be no more then about .010 freeplay between the ring & pinion gears. Grab the yoke at the rear u-joint. Ther should be no uo & down movement. Do you have any humming noise from the reart that changes when you step on the throttle or back mout of it?
