The frame on my 67 has an upward bend on the top, on the right side of the front half of the engine compartment. Looks like it was bent to make room for something. The left side doesn't have this. I noticed that a lot of pix of frames also have this bend. Anybody know the reason?

I take it you're talking about the drivers side? I believe that it's provisions for a power steering set-up.

It's actually on the passenger side. I have a 350, so I don't have any idea what it does, except wear a hole in the radiator hose!

I may be wrong but I noticed that too. There is also that same kind of bend downward halfway down the frame on the bottom flange on both rails. The impression that I get from it is those are high stress points on the frame and the factory made those to provide extra strength. I hope a knowledgeable person who knows will post the answer.

I have always wonder that same thing, my opinion would be "frame clearance for the fuel pump when pulling/installing a V8 engine?

I do happen to know why those bends on the bottom of some chassis are for, some people think those are there for the tranny crossmemer to slide out but negative, those bends were made for clearance of the factory muffler hangers...67s 68s didnt came with those, not sure about 69-70 but all 71-72s have them. I actually cut those off when I shortened my LWB chassis ( just in case I decide to lay frame in the future )

If it's a bend that goes for roughly 6-9 inches and is lengthwise with the frame, it's to clear the fuel pump on a big block. I'm not sure why a 67 would have one because I always thot that 68 was the first year for a big block. My 72 GMC that I used to have had a 402 BB and if not for that bend up portion in the frame the fuel pump would have rubbed.

If 67's aren't supposed to have them, that would mean my frame is not a 67? Great. The plot thickens. I think the PO must have went to a junk yard, plucked a bunch of parts, and built a franken-gmc. Now I know how to make it run: Lightening! Just need a lightening rod and a storm!

We have a 67 Chev at our shop I'll have to go look at it and see if it has the bend in it. Mabe yours is a very late 67 and they were gearing up for 68s with a big block. I'll let you know what I find out and take some pics. Jared

Diablo, Im sure all 67-72s have that "passanger engine side bend" on the chassis, also I think it was not just designed only for the "big block engines" but for all V8s.

i had always thought bbc fuel pump too, but, I was shon on here, it is oil filter clearance for an inline... which is why a 67 would have it.

They may not have offered a big block until`68,but they knew it in`67.

Longhorn man is totally right, I've never own a truck with an inline six, but I do have one of those engines out there and the oil filter does seem to stick out into the frame bend direction.

After doing some checking I believe the 6 cylinder filter aswell.
I checked the 67 and it was there, can't see it in the pic very well.

I even checked Derric's (KDRodworks316) 65 Suburban and sure enough it has one too. We all know that no 66 and earlier had a big block from the factory. These are better pics.

I looked at my Jimmy and it looks like the bend in the frame is there to prevent the lower radiator hose from cutting into the frame. I have the pre molded factory type lower hose. Who knows??????

I've always been told it is for Big Block fuel pump clearance and I've seen a few installed and they do come very close to the frame right there.

Look at 250ci inline six trucks. It looks to me as if it's so you can put a long oil filter on them.
