More Exhaust/Muffler questions
Okay guys (and Gals) here’s the deal. It’s time for me to get a dual exhaust on my 68 SWB. I have a Stock 350 from a 77 ‘Vette along with the 350 Trans. I’m not looking for LOUD, I’m looking for DEPTH. Here’s what I’m thinking; Stock manifolds, H-pipe connected using one of two mufflers I’ve narrowed it down to.
I’m thinking of using either Hooker AeroChambers or the Hushpowers. I’m not going to go 2 ½, I’m going to stick with 2 ¼ cause it’s a bone stock engine and like I said I don’t want Too loud, but I do want depth, as in a DEEP rumble. I’m going to slice my tips too, cause I understand that’ll add to reducing any “raspy” type of notes. And I’m also going to carry it all the way out similar to stock location. What I’d like to know from everyone is their opinion on that set-up and can I ask for Pics with how everyone has routed your exhaust, Please? I’m going to print those and make sure my exhaust guy sees what I’m talking about and we can both have a clear understanding of what I want and what he can do. I sure would appreciate everyone’s input on this. One more thing; has anyone on here heard or seen anyone using the AeroChambers? I saw some videos and I really like the way they sound. But I like the Hushpower also.

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
I'm unfamiliar with the 2 mufflers you're thinking about. I know the usual suspects: Flowmaster and Magnaflow. I am a 100% convert to Magnaflow! The Flowmasters always have a point at which the reverb is deafening. The Magnaflows with in H pipe are smooth as anything I've heard! No slicing of tips needed. I ran dual 2 1/2" all the way out as you said you want to. It was not loud at all, idled quietly and was just an all around great option.
FYI, if you nail it and run it up to 5000 rpm, ANYTHING will make some noise as I'm sure you know. One last thing: The Magnaflows last WAY longer than most mufflers from I've heard and read. I had mine for 5 years before selling the truck and they were still sealed up and performing just fine. Good luck! |

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
Thanks for the reply Longhorn. I do want it to rumble at idle, but I just want to try to eliminate as much of the Nasty "RAP, RAP" when you start to get on it. The Magnaflows were in the running when I was looking at all my choices and they might still be there, cause I'm also not sure if the AeroChambers will fit with our rear end set-up.
Plus like I said I'm also looking for Pics of routing out piping if anyone would please post those.

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
hushpowers are crap! i ran them for about 2 days on my hot rod and they robbed power and sounded like hell to me. a good 2.25in exhaust system with an h pipe and a good set of flows or magnaflows will work. if you dont want it loud and want a good tone you should look at flowmasters 50 s.u.v. series , they ahve a good tone and dont resonate inside the cab.

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
Dynomax ultraflow. The 2.25 duals will work good, but currently I believe 2.25 into a 3" single with a good merge (flowmaster's only good product) is better for mileage and torque kn a stocker. The single is slightly smaller in volume than 2.25 duals and a single scavenges better with a proper (again, flowmaster is good). If you go with duals I would recommend an x-pipe. They're smoother and quieter while performing better

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
Good ol set of Turbo mufflers is what I have. Sweet idle, and great tone with out rattling you inside. Only time it gets real reverb-y is at 900 rpm, my "Car Alarm Tester" when in the ghetto.
There is a lot more bass/tone in real life, blame the chitty camera I was using. It's only loud when you wring it out, IMO Last edited by texanidiot25; 10-18-2009 at 04:16 PM. |

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
Turbos resonated like a hoe on my longbed, they were right before the axle and Dumped after it. 2.25 pinched pipe, no crossover and stock manifolds. No name turbos

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
Could be the brand then. Only time these resonate is under load and under 1000 rpm. Long tube headers, 2.25", no H pipe.

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
Been running Hedman headers with Flowmaster 40 series Classics and 2 1/4" pipes. Have been very happy with them as I get the very deep rumble at idle. Normal driving is OK and I can live with it. When you jump on it, it sounds like one of them Modifieds at my local track and every cop in my county suddenly looks up!

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
I have used aerochamber mufflers on the 4th Gen f-bods, I LIKE THEM.
I prefer Magnaflow but either one is good. I have used the Dynomax also and they are slightly louder than Aerochamber at idle. Magnaflow being the quietest at idle.

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
I have stock pipe diameter with H pipe cross over, and the tail pipes exit out the back behind the rear tire while using the stock rams.
I am using Flowmaster series 70's. I went this route, since I didn't want it to sound like a dragster. I'm really happy with the sound, and it is quiet enough for me to "hear" the engine while it runs. Heck my drive train makes more noise than the exhaust while on the highway.

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
I'd say the Aerochambers are kinda in the middle between Magnaflow and Flowmaster. They have a deeper tone like a Magnaflow, but louder.
Here's mine with Hooker headers, and true-dual Hooker aerochambers: http://www.personal.psu.edu/jxu109/t...ro_chamber.wav And here is is with Thorley Tri-y's and Magnaflow header-back with X-pipe: http://www.personal.psu.edu/jxu109/t...rleytri-ys.wav |

Re: More Exhaust/Muffler questions
Have you looked at the Cherry Bomb Vortex mufflers? I'm gonna run one on my F@&d when I have the exhaust done on it. The vortex muffler is basically a combination of a Flowmaster and a Magnaflow muffler.
I have 2.5" pipes with Flowmaster Super 40's on my 68. It's kinda loud, but I like it that way since it's not a DD. My 86 GMC with a stock engine and manifolds had 2.25" pipes and the 50 series Delta Flow Flowmasters with an H pipe. It had the perfect mellow tone. It wasn't loud at all, didn't resonate bad in the cab, and just sounded great. It was just loud enough to know it.
