tried to connect Alt., now lights don't work.
Well I took home those digrams and wiring info I got from you all and felt all gungho, my lights were working, shifting linkage was ready to be installed, had my pull switch ready to set up my backing lamps. So I go and connect the starter from the Ign., and I go to connect my Alt., I couldn't figure out how the Dist. connected to whatever. So I thought, why not try the key to see what happens. It tried to turn over about 5x's but wouldn't. Then it would'nt even try turn over and the lights just stopped working all together, not even the wipers worked. The battery wasn't weak, and the gas gauge was reading. I figured I blew a fuse, so I changed all the fuses...Nothing.
I don't know what happened. I also had unplugged the Switch on the column for the back-up lamps. What happened? I'm sure it has to do with the distributer, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHERE OR HOW OR TO WHAT IT GOES TOO!!!!! All I know is that below the hood cowl and above the engine in the wire gutter, there are threeor four wires. A Purple one for the starter, a green one, a white one and I think a yellow one. They come from the little port above the the port for the lighting. WHAT THE HELL DO THESE WIRES DO?????????? If any one can help me out. How do you make a 3-speed column work for auto, I got it I think, I'm just checking. I'm sorry guys...I feel dumb...Whats a Tranny? HA HA I'm very new to auto stuff as you can tell. But I get a lot of help from my dad, his mechanic and my girlfreinds dad and some stuff from here and some I learn all my own. I appreciate this place very much. Without it I don't think I would have the courage to try to do stuff myself. I'm sorry I've just gone off tonight, but it's either get help for my truck or practice my sax...both of which are important, but I need my truck to get me places, or practice will be for nothing. Dig, guys? I'll tell my story about how I got fascinated with 67-72 bowties later. It sounds like you lost your main power feed.
Have you checked the fusible link on the right side of the radiator support? Jim

Jim,
Is that the tiny box by the battery with a fused wire, a ground and the wire that connects to the Positive terminal? Or are you talking about the wires in the plastic gutter infront of the radiator? Still need to know what those wires below the hood cowl go to and do. Thanks!!!! ------------------ IN A TUX WITH A 68 BOWTIE. *SELLING FOR PARTS* "P.O.S" Stepside 68, Primed from Fl., rusted out a bit, but *SELLING FOR PARTS* Interested? E-mail me!! The fusible link is between the the little terminal bolted to your fender and the radiator. It is taped up so that you can't
see it. Probably the easiest way to check it is to check the large red wire at your altenator. If there is no power there, then check the fusible link. The little red wire that leads from the terminal on the fender that goes into the wiring harness on the radiator support ties directly into the fusible link. If the link is burned out, you will need to replace it. On your wires in the gutter, purple wire is the starter wire and hooks to the inside post on your solenoid on a V-8, the white wire is the factory ingtion wire that hooks to the positive side of your coil, it is also a resister wire. The green wire is the temperature sensor wire. The yellow wire goes to the outside post of the starter solenoid to provide 12 volts to the coil when starting, it ties into your white wire inside the taped harness. Do you have this link for wiring diagrams? www.geocities.com/chevroletc1070/wiringdias.html Good luck! Jim

If you don't have one, get a volt meter. It can be the cheap kind from Radio Shack, but you need to be able to see if you have voltage to various points in your system, like those referenced by Jim.
Electrical gremlins can be a pain. What kind of work did you do on your truck that required all the wiring disconnects? How long has it been down? Are you saying the starter cranked 5 times and quite? If the lights worked before, but don't now. Look to see if you have voltage in the battery. You may also need to take the battery to a shop and have them test it to see if its gone bad. If you hooked things up really wrong, or backwards, you may have damaged the battery. That's why I asked what you changed, to get a feel for what systems you may have been altering. ------------------ Frisco, Tx '68 C-10 LWB, '98 Z-71 350 w/accessories (Serpentine), Edelbrock Performer, Edelbrock 1405 (600cfm) carb, GM HEI, CompCam Extreme 4x4 roller cam, Thorley Headers, Carter Electric Fuel Pump, Vintage Air, 700r4, 3.73, disc brakes and power steering upgrades.
