Did they make 4 door trucks in these years?

I've seen some pictures of some 4 door trucks from 69-72. Did they modify a burb and if so how did they do the 4th door considering burbs didnt have that.

I'll move this to the 67-72 trucks forum for you. You should get a better response there.

You might want to define "they".

They, the factory: No.

They, the aftermarket coach works: Yes

They, individual craftsmen: Yes

It's been done with 2 cabs and also with a Suburban.

For those that have used Suburbans, the B-pillar and 4th door was usually manufactured from scratch using pieces of multiple doors and hand fabbed pieces.

the ones built back in the day by the conversion companies and sold through GM dealers were funny looking, and considered by most to be fugly.

Yeah, it's kind of ironic that Ford and Dodge really had the corner on the larger-than-standard cabs and GM didn't counter for quite some time. Imagine if our trucks came with a King Cab ala Ford from the factory so it wasn't "fugly"... How awesome would that have been...

Iv'e seen pictures of extended cab trucks as well as 4 door trucks that were built by some coach works company. They have all been up north or in Canada it seems. The trucks Iv'e seen in person have all been custom fabbed by an individual and have been poorly done. I don't care for the Suburban conversions, the roof is too tall. I have also seen many wide "dually" conversions done using step side fenders over fleetside fenders, usually looks sharp. I'd like to get my hands on a stock 4 door even if they are fugly. Using front doors for the rears does make them look goofy.

I know that all AMERICAN Fords up to the mid 80's or so were all standard cab, all the crew cabs that were made were Canadian made. In the body shop now is a friend's 1970 Ford crewcab. It started out as a 2x4 for the state and was sold to him in '76. He fixed it up for his first wife, but after towing with a 460 and a 3 speed auto getting 150 miles on 90 gallons of gas he said piss on that and sub framed a 93 Dodge 4x4 with a cummins and a 5 speed. Even though it is a Ford it still is a really sharp clean truck *(until he gave it to his son as a graduation present) I'll see if I can snap some pics of the door badge tomorrow

Re: Did they make 4 door trucks in these years?

the best look for a custom built crew cab would be to use the suburban front doors with the pickup rear roof. it looks factory that way. using 2 rows of pickup doors just tips the eye off that its a custom setup and doesn't go as well with the drip rail.

Hart_rod....keep the 3/4 ton rear coils if you are staying with a coil spring suspension and not lowering the truck. the hd coils should be standard equipment on the back of the 1/2 ton. the 1/2 ton coils can't take serious loads without sag and end up permanently sagged after a few years. the stock coils on the back of my 3/4 ton burb are in great shape for 37 years old.....but i do plan to replace them some day with the 3/4 ton HD option units because i don't like ANY dip in the back when i hitch up. soft springs ride nice on the front though!

I think they were being smart about it.The demand was low for a crew cab back then.Trucks were for cargo more than passengers. They only made sense to specific types of work with more laborers and less tools/materials.They`re only made now because trucks became so widely used in place of cars.Besides,GM made the Suburban.I always figured the big three figured there wasn`t enough demand.IH was the only one to make both a crewcab and the Travelall.

Re: Did they make 4 door trucks in these years?

I think that the use of the front doors for all 4 is what made them look "goofy".If one was to use the original 4 door cab and fab doors, frames and such from Burb doors, taking out the sloped front of the rear doors they would probably be able to build a pretty sharp truck from one.In fact IIRC there is a Gold and white one that way that has been in a few mags.

Re: Did they make 4 door trucks in these years?

The gold crew cab in the picture above was featured in Custom Classic Trucks magazine about 6 or 8 years ago. It was very nicely done. I have the issue that is was featured in but it would take forever to find. I am sure someone can give you more info. about the truck. I do know it was for sale about a year or so ago for about $45,000? I believe. Which I thought was reasonable due to the high quality of workmanship that went into it.

This is not a 4 door but it is a nice extended cab that was built by an individual, not me.

Re: Did they make 4 door trucks in these years?

Here's a link to mine. I got it out of Phoenix. Supposedly it was a GM test vehicle, but there's no way to prove it. It was built from a truck by splitting it in half and adding 33 inches in the center. Both rear doors were cut down from front doors. I have a set of suburban doors that I will be adding to it when I start the metal work. Here's a link to the build thread and a couple of pictures.

I built a custom frame to convert it from a 3/4T long bed to a 1/2T short bed. The body has a few issues, but overall it's in really good shape. I've got all the sheet metal to get it back on the road in a nice fashion.....

That's the Gold and White one I was talking about. It has exceptional work done to it.IIRC it was built specifically as a tow rig for the Burb but is at least as nice.

An up close inspection it would look like they took a set of front doors, put them in a jig and started hacking them up and making them fit

From what I have researched and have been told ALL f*rd crews from this era were made in the great nort'
