Almost 300,000 Miles
Gosh, it’s been a while since I checked in here. After chugging around with almost 300,000 miles on my truck and I thought it was a good time to give her some special treats.
I finally had the old Rochester 2-Jet carburetor rebuilt. I switched up to a 195 degree thermostat (from a 180) even though I removed the air injection reaction system. And I advanced my timing to around 7-degrees. I have always had it set to specifications of 2 degrees. Wow! The old 307 purrs like a kitten at idle, but jumps off the line now. No pinging at all at any rpm. The old GMC is running strong and I feel like a kid again, I can’t keep from grabbing second gear! I know this isn't some high performance build story, but for me, this little bit of fine tuning made an awesome improvement. I just had to tell someone.

Re: Almost 300,000 Miles
Sacto Joe,it`s been awhile and your truck hasn`t aged a day.I can`t remember,is that the original motor?I don`t believe I`ve never seen a 307 with the old-style intake before.
I just have one other question...Does you daughter like the truck?

Re: Almost 300,000 Miles
It sounds like that motor is balanced very nicely. Good to see it's lasted so long.

Re: Almost 300,000 Miles
The odometer reads 99,990 today. Now, I don't want to drive it more than 9 miles. I just sit in the seat and stare at the numbers.

Re: Almost 300,000 Miles
Hey, when it comes time for new point, swap 'em out with a Pertronix Ignitor. As amazed as you are with your truck now, you'll probably be that much more amazed with this quick addition! The cold starts are awesome and just all around performance improves.
Great truck, story, kids, etc... Good luck to ya! Keep it going! |

Re: Almost 300,000 Miles
Well, I clicked the odometer over today. I was driving to my dad's house so my boys could mow his lawn and rake the leaves. We all celebrated as it turned over. My mom looked at the odometer and said she remembered it had 8 miles on it when they bought it new in December 1968.
My 14-year-old son can push in the clutch now so, soon, he will have learn to drive her. I'm gonna go run some errands. I love to drive my truck hard, like I always did when I was a kid. That way if something breaks, I get to buy something new for it.

Re: Almost 300,000 Miles
So I went out to run my errands and learned that my son had jammed the gears, the truck wouldn't move. I had to get under the hood and get the collar and the shifters aligned on the steering column. Its good to see that the security system is still working! You gotta have finesse to drive this machine.

Re: Almost 300,000 Miles
Just wait until the kids start driving, and maybe they can add a post is several years stating that the truck is at 500,000-miles!
Good Luck MrBlue
