I wouldn't think rare, but not seen that often. 3 speed manual or automatic? The manual was the standard tranny. PB were a common option in 72. Not trying to be negative or anything. Now if you're talking desirable, it's the most desirable next to a short fleet of the 67-72 on average. Would be worth some coin if it's nice. PICS???

I would say extreemly uncommon, pushing rare.
The short step was usually stripped down low option/no option trucks. I've only seen a few on here with big blocks.
What other options are on there, you have any photos of the SPID?

I think most bb came in lwb trucks and the swb fleetside bb were some what rare but, a swb stepside with a 402 ss three speed with power steering would be rare. Buddy

Back in the 90's my brother picked up a 19k original mile 72 C10 LWB w/ a 402 TH400, PS, PB, AC. No chrome anywhere on the truck, poverty caps, painted bumpers. It was the factory pale yellow color, solid, no white top, no side trim. I have never seen another truck quite like it. The original owner he bought it from said he specail ordered it because he wnated the " big motor" and nothing else. He had no idea that it was collectible, just a work truck that got 9 mpg. (THe reason he quit driving it.) Got it for $2k (!) We installed a different bed due to the fact that the PO used it to haul wood chips from his cabinet shop and it rusted out, then repainted it, and sold it to make some cash. Sold it for $11k (!) He still had the orirignal window sticker, protecto plate and paperwork and he paid MORE for it than my uncle did for his 72 C10 LWB Cheyenne 402 TH400 with tilt tach and PS PB AC that he got off the lot at A.J Foyt Chevrolet in Pasadena Tx.

Back on the subject of a short Stepside with a big block,I`d say it`s pretty rare.I think that conquers with Andy.The notch between rare rare and uncommon...very uncommon/pretty rare

Valuable?In original condition or restored to original:Very!

As far as shortbeds w/BBCs and how they were optioned...they came in all shapes and forms.Many trucks were still customer-orders.I had one of two matching`68s two brothers ordered:396/3spd/posi/tach/CST/buckets/red-white top/dog dish...no p/s or p/b.

SWB means Short Wide Bed which is a short box with fleet side meaning not Stepside

I see this a lot and it just kind of bugs me.

Went and looked a truck that the guy in the craigslist ad said SWB and after a 30 min drive it ended up being a '73-87 step side. The guy could send pics and I was ticked.

I will disagree with that. SWB should be short wheel base.

A 72 SWB stepside, with a BBC and a manual trans would be very uncommon, IMO.

SWB means short wheelbase and LWB means long wheelbase,as used in manufacturer literature.There is no SNB or LNB.They would say "Stepside",even if it was a GMC Fenderside,Ford Flareside,or Dodge Utiline.

It`s like this,and always was since Fleetsides became the mainstay:
*Shortbed means Shortbed Fleetside.If you don`t mean a Fleetside you say...

*Stepside means short stepside.

*Longbed means Long Fleetside.If you meant Stepside you`d say...

*Long Stepside means what it says.

*If you just say pickup it means long wide bed because that`s the majority.

We get people every now and then making the same mistake.it`s a widespread misconception.It`s easy to see where the confusion comes from.But,there has to be a distinction and that is it,short wheelbase.

I think it is a reigonal thing too, but I concur with Tim... SWB is short wheel base.
To help prevent this, and to describe faster, I normally say short step, short fleet, long step, long fleet. No confusion, no arguments, direct and to the point.
The cool ones have there own name... like, longhorn.

As for the long step question, they are fairly rare, but for the best part, considerably less desirable. They do have a following, but it is a small following.

Is it a base model with no chrome? If so, it would be known as a sleeper. Nobody would suspect a big block in a plain jane. It would be an uncommon find, since most big blocks were installed in longbeds loaded with options. About longbed stepsides, attitudes on these models seperate the car people from the truck people. Stepsides were the body of choice for heavy and hard work. Much easier to load with no wheelwells and faster to jump into the back. Up to '72, the 1 ton 30 series had longest bed, a 9' stepside, not a 9' fleetside.

I`m a small follower of the long Stepside.I like the traditional looks that are all truck.The Fleetsides came along when car-like styling was being added to trucks,following the Cameo/Suburban Carrier`s footsteps.

I think older stepside bed trucks flow better with the cab, as opposed to the 67-72's that have a more square looking cab/front end. That is why I like fleetsides on our trucks. JMO.
