Does anyone know of a fitting that would allow me to connect a 5/16" SS hardline to a 1/4" NPT female fitting? The application is to connect a transmission cooler (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DER-13261/) using 5/16" SS hardline.

You should be able to get fittings like that at any parts store. You might need to step it down though. I mean a real parts store. Not the ones that sell exhaust tips, seat covers and license plate frames.

summit has all the fittings you'd need// you'll need tools to flare the SS tubing

Apparently not in this case. I have communicated with Summit a few times and they do not have the fittings needed.

you don't want to put that stainless line on a brass fitting ... you will never get a proper seal because of the stainless being harder than the brass. You need the tubing to deform around the inverted flare in the fitting to make the proper seal.

Why are you stuck on using 5/16" line? You can easily do what you are trying to achieve with either 3/8" or 1/2" line and a 1/4" NPT tubing adapter.

Thanks for the advise. I am thinking of using 5/16" simply because that is how it came from the factory if I am not mistaken.

Not trying to plug anyones product but i have used this stuff for a lot of things

Theres a company called swedgelock. (not sure of the spelling).
you should have local distributers for their stuff. they make stainless fittings that should work for you. they even have compression fittings that they guarantee, not to leek or come apart before the tubing rips. i would trust there compression stuff before i would trust anyones flare fittings. its that good.
