1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Hi guys, I have had this truck for a while so I will start from the beginning. My first daily driver was a 70 chevy longhorn that was my uncle’s, then my dad’s. When I got my first K20 I used the Longhorn for parts and scrapped the truck and have regretted it ever since. About 3 years ago I bought this truck on ebay. I got it pretty cheap and decided that this would be converted to a 4x4 at some point and I am going to paint it the same color as my first Longhorn was, a burnt red or orange. I can’t remember what the actual color was on the spid now. Really the truck wasn’t in too bad of shape considering it came from Minnesota. Here are some pics of when I first got it home.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

It had a 402 in it and is a custom deluxe. I plan on putting Cheyenne Super badges on it with upper and lower moldings and someday have it look like this truck.
(I can't get the picture to upload.)
My current plan is to make this my daily driver and park my 05 Dodge. I am going to put in a 90 5.9 Cummins with a 98 NV4500 and a 92 NP205. The rear end is up in the air at this point. I also will run 36’s until I get some smaller front springs for it.
Ok now on to the real work. I removed the 2wd disc brake front suspension and sold it.

This was last fall. I moved out of the shop I was renting and the Longhorn got parked out back at home. I bought a 72 K5 and parted it out. I kept the things I needed for the Longhorn to make it 4wd. Here is the K5 frame.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Now it is a year later and I have nothing real major to do as we are in between putting up a new shop. So I dug the Longhorn out and got back to work on it. I removed the front clip and cut off the radiator support mounts. These pictures are kind of fuzzy because I took them with my phone.

I added a brace in the middle of the frame because I had to remove the front cross member to be able to install the steering box brace from the K5 frame.

I got the 4x4 radiator support mounts/leaf spring hangers cleaned up and installed.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Next I drove out the old rubber shackle bushings and installed new polyurethane ones in the shackles and the leaf spring. I am using some 6” lift leaf springs I have from another project. Here is a pic of the 67-72 shackle mount. They are different from the 73-87 ones.

Spring hangers mounted.

Steering box brace installed.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Everyone says the 2wd frames and 4wd frames are the same except for some holes need to be drilled and the park brake cable mounts are in the way of the shackles for the 4wd’s. Well I found out one more place they are different. At the steering box mount on the frame. The 2wd one is a little off from the 4wd one. I will have to drill the holes that are off out and weld up the other side so they aren’t oblonged.

I measured the K5 frame to see where my shackles needed to be. Sure enough right hardware mounts in the frame. I decided I wanted this to look like it could have came from the factory so I cut out these spots and installed a flat piece of steel there so it would look more like a clean install.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Cut out

Ground and beveled ready to weld in place.

I started welding it but the wind was blowing pretty hard and blowing the gas off the weld, so I’ll had to finish it another day.

Ground after welding

LH cut out

Outside welded and ground

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Next thing now that I am ready to install the rear shackles, I decided I better set a leaf spring up there and see what it looked like. I noticed the day before that my 6” springs looked a little longer than my stock K5 ones. Sure enough they are a little longer. I contemplated buying some new ones for this body style, but the funds are a little tight after my last parts spending spree. I rolled a spare D44 under the frame and put the front springs on. I then set the LH fender on to see if the wheel is centered in the wheel well.

It was better than I expected. It looks perfect to me, so I started installing the shackles in the frame.

I am going to have to notch the body mount for the bolt or make an offset washer to set under the other washer so the bolt has even load placed on it. I will do this sooner or later.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

I am going to get new front leaf spring bolts and I need to wait for it to dry up so I can dig out the D60 and get them installed maybe next week with any luck.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Well I got the fenders primered after work last night. Today I drilled and bolted the LH shackle to the frame, and I installed the trim back on the LH fender. Tonight I have to go get new poly bushings for the support so next week I can put the front clip together to start mocking up the engine.

Looking real good. You might ask to put this over in the 4x4 build thread. We tend to miss 4x4 builds over here until they are moved. Trevor

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

This will be a fun one to watch I/m curious, why you didn't go with a 2nd generation 12 valve Cummins? I had one in a 96' that was unstoppable, and it seems like it is such a bomb proof motor.

Can't wait to see her come back to life, either way!

Because this is what I have left laying around. I have the P pump style in other projects. Besides the VE pump engines get better mileage.

I purchased it frm a guy locally, but it is a Tri-Plus hood. It fits really well and is a nice piece as well. Not a thin poor built unit like some others being sold.

No real progress today. I started putting the trim on the RH fender so I could put it on. Here is a picture of my reconditioned hood springs.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Thanks Mr.Beast. I finally got the front clip sitting on it. Man I think it looks better than I thought it would. I might have to stick a 60 under it and put the front tires on it to get a real ride heighth.

It might be a few weeks before I can really work on it again. I have to finish up our shop that we are putting up and then I have some customer trucks to work on. We'll just have to see how it goes.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

I am planning on it. I have one from a FL70 that I hope to get in there without chopping up this nice radiator support. Hopefully it will go up over the support and leave enough room for the hood to close.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Ok, no progress on work.................... But I did dig the 4.5' drift from in front of it, removed the front clip, and moved it in front of the new to us shop. Tomorrow I plan on starting on the cummins engine mounts. Hopefully by the end of the weekend I can have an engine and trans sitting in the frame rails. I keep hearing how weak these Dana 60 rear axle shafts are.............. I'm worried. Since the rear is already 3:54, I'm using my chevy front D60 that is 3:54 as well. Hopefully the rear can live long enough to get some miles on the truck. I am using a NV4500 and a dodge NP205. I believe I have everything to get this bolted together. We'll see how it goes.

Very cool project you have going! Man, I can relate to working out in the dirt and mud....I only recently made enough room in my shop to start working inside. We still don't have room for the frame but have been working on the cab.

Just curious if you will have to beef up the frame any to put the diesel engine in there? Keep up the good work!
