Pictures of the Carnage

on the way to college yesterday I blew my rear end up.

here's the info
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=372529

I pulled the diff cover off right after the symptoms started and I didn't see anything suspicious, (I was just changing the fluid and checking the gears, I thought the noises it was making were coming from somewhere else)

these are the lager pieces that came out when I pulled the diff cover, there were tons of metal pieces

so now I've got to get another rear

Re: Pictures of the Carnage

if it helps your the second one Ive seen in 3 months the other one looks the same way ..the spring pin that holds the spider gear shaft broke then it was just a matter of time before it falls HALFWAY out tears up the rear cover for a second before the shaft hits the cast case ussually locking the wheels for a second until it breaks the pin off or you STOP...fast....
we reused the case and just dropped a cunk into it with a locker ..just be sure to check your backlash

Re: Pictures of the Carnage

I saw a truck break one when I was a kid in the late 70's or early 80's. He was going past the house, probably running 60. Sure was a heck of a skid, he ended up sideways in the road, we had to drag him into the yard with our Massey Fergason. I remember it had quite a pucker factor on that guy!

Re: Pictures of the Carnage

I guess I'm lucky that mine just broke, instead of locking up.

I was accelerating (rather slowly) from a stoplight and only going about 30mph when it happened. but I'm glad it broke so I could push it off the middle of the street.

Re: Pictures of the Carnage

I'd just put another set of used spider gears and center pin in and keep on trucking.

Agreed. If nothing made it's way into the ring and pinion gear set, put another set of spiders and center pin in, keep driving for a while until you have time/money to put in another rear end.

Re: Pictures of the Carnage

It's a 30 splines. Looks like water mixed with gear oil to me. Was that rear submerge in water?
