has anyone ever seen a gmc 302?

they were only made from '52 to '59 i think... mostly in big trucks and buses... i've only seen one in my life and at the time didn't know what i was looking at... they've got people out there making 500 to 600 horse with these motors... i think they are popular with the rat rod guys... just pretty cool...

Re: has anyone ever seen a gmc 302?

Use to run them in my old GMCs. Had a 52 GMC 6x6 at the fire dept. with one also. GMCs had 228s, 248s, 270s and 302s inline sixs. Same block, Different bores. There is a pad on the side of the block next to the distributer telling the size. The 302 was the one to find, pure torque monster. I got one left in a 56 GMC 2 ton. They use to make aftermarket multi carb intakes and split exhaust manifolds for them.

I have one ready to go into my 40 gmc Panel. And another on an engine stand waiting for the right truck. They sound great with split exhaust!

Re: has anyone ever seen a gmc 302?

would a gmc 292i6 crank fit in a gmc 302? i would assume at least some machining i would probably want to look for the civilian version i assume. cuz i thought a 302 stroked even more plus with a small turbo, or multiple carbs would be cool, but ive never really found info or tried researching to hard, if u dont know its fine i was just curious, im in to odd ideas, guess its why im hotrodding a c25 gmc with a 292i6 and offroad with it too,(pulled jeeps out of more mud holes then theyve pulled me!!)

I believe the Jimmy crank is about 1.5 inches longer. That is a guess though.

Re: has anyone ever seen a gmc 302?

my dad had one in a blue 36 Chevy business coupe that he ran against Ford-Illacs at the Oakland-Alameda raceway. he partnered with a guy named Gordy. Dad did the paint and body while Gordy did the mechanicals. he said something about Buick valve springs inside the GMC ones to keep the valves from floating. but then they had to have some tool steel pushrods made.

Never seen a 302 GMC myself, but if you troll around on www.inliners.org -- you might get some info. As I understand the GMC 226, 248, 270, 302s were different even from their contemporary Chevrolet division L6s: 216, 235, 261. The L-22 family of L6s: 194, 230, 250, 292 was a next generation.
