Removing Bellhousing Crossmember?
Hey guys,
In the process of installing long tube headers on my 62' and ran into a problem with collector to bellhousing crossmember clearance. I have swapped out my SM420 for a Muncie M21 and also fabbed up an auto trans style crossmember that goes under the trans tailshaft. So my questions is, can i remove the bellhousing crossmember without causing any problems? My truck has the horse shoe style front motor mount so im a bit concerned that the trans crossmember has to support both the trans and the rear of the engine. However, im no expert so id like to hear everyone else's opinion/experience Thanks so much |

Re: Removing Bellhousing Crossmember?
You're going to need to convert to side engine mounts. With the horse shoe mount on the front and tail shaft mount in the rear, there will be nothing to keep the engine from twisting over from torque. In addition, if you're using an aluminum bell housing with a support span so far apart, there can be enough stress to cause pilot shaft/clutch alignment problems if not a broken bellhousing. You should be able to use the mounts shown on the attached link with a 1" spacer to make up for the difference in frame heights from the 62 to the later style frame.

Re: Removing Bellhousing Crossmember?
I agree with markb01, You need to convert to side motor mounts. You can also use the '73-'87 style mounts for the conversion. The frame brackets from a 3/4 ton will work better than the ones from a 1/2 ton. However on the '60-'62's you will still need a spacer on top of the frame as shown on the link above.
