TH350 no 3rd gear
I've got a 72 C10 long bed fleetside 2wd with a 350ci and a TH 350 trans, but the tranny wont go into 3rd gear. 1st and 2nd work great, and the trans fluid looks and smells fine. what could be the cause? ive heard the modulator and the vacuum line as possible causes. might it be the fluid filter? or does it just need a full rebuild/replacement?

Re: TH350 no 3rd gear
no, its a TH350. I know it is because my dad had the truck for 22 years and now i have it. it lost 3rd gear when he was using it for his work truck.

Have you checked your shifter/linkage?

Re: TH350 no 3rd gear
Go fire it up, and let it warm up for 10 or 15 min, then drive it down the road, but run it like a manual shift, and shift it just a little bit after you think it should shift on its own. No need to race the engine to 5000 RPM before putting it in the next gear, but a little but higher than what it would do on it's own if it was working right.
Does it shift into second like it should? Or does it rev to the moon and then slam into second? |

Re: TH350 no 3rd gear
What I know about transmissions could fit in a thimble and rattle around... But I did have a '71 Chevelle with a TH350. One day, it would just barely shift into 2nd and returned to first as soon as you let off the gas. It turned out that the vacuum line had come loose down at the trans. I hooked it up and away I went! You might want to start there.

Re: TH350 no 3rd gear
to airdale94; yup, the shifter/ linkage is fine.
to Longhorn Man; i cant go out right now, cuz its a 2wd with crappy tires and the roads are snowy and icy, but when i get the chance, i will. it shifts into 2nd on its own fine, no prob there.

Re: TH350 no 3rd gear
if it is shifting fine into second, then it is most likely not going to be the governor, vacuum modulator or the kickdown.
I would tripple check the fluid level (engine running, warmed up, and after going through all the gears) and if the fluid level is good, then the news is most likely bad news. |
