292 to 350 engine swap...Do I need to replace crossmember
I originally had this posted in the 4x4 section but only had 2 responses so I'm looking for a little more input.
I started breaking down my chassis, it's a 68 GMC 4x4 SWB that I'm turning into a 70 Chevy 4x4 SWB. The current engine is getting yanked out but while I was pulling drive shafts and shocks and other stuff, I noticed the motor mounts on the 292 have stands and all kinds of stuff. Once I yank this engine, I can just buy 350 motor mounts and be done right or no? Also, with the 292 to 350 swap will the placement of the tranny and t/case stay in the same place? Further, if I do need to change crossmembers can I use the one that's on the 2wd SWB frame now and switch it to my 4x4 SWB chassis? Happy Holidays, Patsy! |

Re: 292 to 350 engine swap...Do I need to replace crossmember
2x4s and 4x4s are both different animals. You won't be able to use any of the 2x4 crossmember parts on the 4x4 chassis. The 292 uses a different frame mounts than the v-8 does. The short of it is if you are useing a 4x4 chassis, and v-8 engine then you need the v-8 engine crossmember for a 4x4 and not a 2x4. I believe that the rubber motor mounts are the same though. Hope this helps. WES

On a positive note, the 292 stuff seems to be desirable so you should be able to recoup money to buy the v8 stuff. I would check with billsbowties he parted a couple of blazers recently and may have the crossmember you need. Harold

Now I'm catching on! Looks like I better start shopping for a 4x4 SWB small block crossmember. Thanks everyone!

Any 4x4 V-8 engine crossmember will do from 67-72. They are all the same, 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, Blazer, Jimmy, Suburban, Panel. long bed, or short bed. WES
