6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

I currently have5 lug brake rotors on 7172 spindles...

i still have a 6 lug rearend and 6 lug rallys on the back. can i order the 6 lug rotors and use my bearings and seals that're in my 5 lug rotors? Im tired of searching for a 5 lug rearend.

Im going to order new brake hoses also. Should I go stainless or rubber? i really like the looks but cant seem to jutsify the extra 75 bucks. (was lookiing in Early classic catalog.

will braided last longer?

i 'heard' that the braided is longer for lowered trucks..my truck isnt lowered but may be in the future. will these braided lines be too long for a stock height truck? thanks

where shoudl i order my stuff from?

Call Stan at ECE.
They have the rotors and anything else you will need.

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

Bearings should be the same.
Are they new?
I like keeping new bearings with new races.
I think Braided lines are an "looks" item on these trucks, since you are not using your brakes like you would on a race car.
Just make sure you buy DOT approve braided lines.
Alot of the lines offered up for sale say, "not for highway use".

I used ECE's "conversion" rubber brake lines when I installed discs on my '69.

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

Well heres what I did,

back in the summer I did a disc brake conversion...new balljoints everything, the whole works from a 71 gmc 1/2 ton

well when it came to lines i was low on $ and ready to get it back on the road. I bought straight hard lines from oriellys didnt really bend em just slapped em on yeah, I know! and reused the 40 YO soft lines (oriellys didnt have them or something) well its currently like that with a 5 lug front and 6 lug rear. I wanna get em matching and working correctly.

1-buy braided or rubber lines (prolly go rubber due to the price)

2-should I buy pre-bent hard lines ($) or try to bend my own?

3-keep hunting a 5 lug rearend in coil spring or just buy 6 lug rotors?

Those are my ?'s thanks

You could always buy 5 lug replacement axles.

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

1) I say rubber since cost seems to affect us all.

2) Prebent lines are the easiest with the engine in place.
Just remember when you order,... the 71-72 hard lines exit on the opposite side of the crossmember than where the drum brake 63-70 trucks did.

3) that's your personal preference on wheel choice.

Ask Stan at ECE all these questions and he will be able to get you the most cost effective solution.

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

I used a set of braided lines from GMC Pauls, I think the set for two fronts and the rear was $115. They bolted up with no problems and worked great, especially when mixing parts like 71/72 calipers with 67-70 hard lines. There were no adapters needed and took approx. 15 minutes to install w/o bleeding.

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

5 lug replacement axles are expensive too much for my budger

So if im using71-72 setup I need 71-72 hardlines correct? I really dont wanna bend my own laying under the truck...so the prebent 71-72 lines will go right in?

71super, I really want braided..If Ima do it, ima try'n do it right $ (learned my lesson the 1st time around lol) when it warms up in the summer ima pull the front clip and wash scrape paint and freshen up my motor.

Ima wait. Found a 5 lug posi 373 rearend in town for 375$ its set up for coil springs..but is from a 60-66 model chevy 2wd

No. Maybe. It depends.
Has your entire crossmember been changed out?
Or just the spindles out?

There's a tab welded to the crossmember in the spot where steel lines convert to rubber lines.
The 71-72 trucks have this tab on the opposite side of the crossmember than what your truck has.
(Unless the entire crossmember has been swapped. I don't know what you have)

You will need to order pre-bent lines that are correct for the year of truck you have. If you order 71-72 lines you will need a tab welded on in that location, since they are different. (unless you swapped crossmembers)
I don't know whats been swapped on your truck.
Like I said, explain what you have to ECE and they will send you the correct parts.

I have the original steel lines on the frame on my '69 disc brake swap.
I just had to bend a few new lines for the master cylinder/porportioning valve.

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

On the truck I did the swap on, I used a NEW set of hard lines from the paddock and the braided lines from GMC Pauls in the stock location for 67-70, as stated earlier, the 71-72 brake line exit in front of the cross member, not the rear and the hard lines are of larger diameter on the 67-70, 71-72 are smaller diameter for MORE pressure at the caliper. I really don't know what you meant about doing it "right" as the kit from GMC Pauls is made to do this exact conversion on trucks that were not originally disk brake trucks i.e. 67-70. If you buy new hard lines for 71/72 the tab will not be in the correct location to mount the hoses nor hold the hard lines in place, you will also have to change the master cylinder and the proportioning valve as well, which will require adapters if you use the 67-70 hard lines. Good luck with your swap.

Did I get the right thing??

front balljoints spindles from 71 1/2 ton gmc disc brake truck?...

Stan said they were conversion hoses. It looks like 1 long hose and 2 short hoses. 1 hose (with t fitting on it)

Did I get the right thing???!?!?!?! Is there another package supposed to come? Im lost and not opening the box till I know what Ive got (dont wanna buy 125$ worth of hoses that wont work for me).

thanks!

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

They sent you the kit I told you about. The short hoses will screw onto your 67-70 hard lines and will match the calipers you have (71-72) and the rotors of your choice either 5 or 6 lug. The long hose is a direct replacement for your stock hose 67-70. It will bolt onto your main hard feed line and connect your two rear wheel cylinders. Make sure you have the 71/72 proportioning valve or you will not have the correct bias between your front and rear brakes and cause problems. By the way these hoses are designed to be routed to the rear of the crossmember not to the front as 71/72 stock lines are routed.

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

The front hoses dont look long enough..... But I guess they'll work lol.

And the longest hose has a T on it its for the rear?

I looked on the site and couldnt match ct1001 up (inlinetube.com)

So theres supposed to be 3 hoses in the kit?

ps the seal came loose on the bottom and spilled a clamp off so i slid the rest of the hoses out. The 'shorter' ones look about right! Im excited to get em on! Now I just gotta wait for the hard lines to get in...They're gonna look sick next against the greasy frame..O well cant wait for warm weather to clean it all up!

Looks like the right product..

The back (long) hose seemed to work but the hose running from front to back of truck on passenger framerail appeared to be leaking and was rusty and I stripped it. Hopefully oriellys carries 8ft tubing. other than that seemed to go good.

Noticed my gas tank to hard line rubber hose was cracked and leaking (THATS why I get crappy mileage lol) WILL BE REPLACED TOMOROW.

Was gonna start on the front and looked at the lines Ive got now and the braided ones and there NOT the same!!

where it mounts to the caliper on the 71 rubber line was a square with probablky a banjo bolt going thru it. Mine didnt have the square and a hole for banjo bolt?!?!?!!?!?!?

I think they sent me braided hoses for a drum drum truck, thats what It said on the reciept (as posted above). The hose they sent me was like 4" shorter than my rubber hose I currently have...

GRRRR.....trucks going to be in the garage for awhile now.

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

I do have the right lines after all thank god!

I bought new hardlines at oriellys today bent it to run down the framerail (pretty straight) Will have it bled hopefully tomorow (or whenever my front lines come in). Will get some pictures of my new braided shiny lines when Im done.

Oh, btw. My 6 month old autozone brake rotors are shot, so are my pads. How long is the warrenty on them and why're they bad already? I kept the reciepts so there going back. Will they refund my money or just give me new stuff to replace it?

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

How old are the calipers?
If they are sticking or the 1 old rubber hose colapsed,... you could eat up a rotor pretty quick.
Did both rotors wear the same?

Re: 6 lug brake rotor and braided line questions

I would replace the calipers while your at it.
Then everything will be new.
And,... alot of time those rubber hoses will collapse on the inside with no visible evidence of it.
