Re: Acetylene safety pics

I got a cousin that pumps acetylene. He has to clean the mix tank from time to time, the last time he cleaned which was like 3 years ago, the purge line that was suppose to get all the gas out didnt do its job to good. My cousin not having any other way of checking for the stuff(the place he works at is to cheap to buy sensors and stuff) was standing right over the hole were the hopper fills the tank with the acetylene pellets. He did something that caused a very small spark and BOOM! My cousin was blown 10 foot back as a 30 foot 3000 degree flame blew out of a 1 foot hole. My cousin lived, but he did look like freddy crougar, which made for a very realistic Halloween that year. He is alright now, no scars or anything which he lucked out on that one, and he still is working there. He does refuse to clean the tank now though.

Re: Acetylene safety pics

Where I work one of the guys decided to make a lil bomb. Started to fill up a black plastic garbage bag with actylene and the static from his sweater
set it off before he was done filling. He was o.k. but his hearing took a few days to recover. None for me thanks!

Hell no, after that happened to my cousin, I wont even go out there with him to get his check anymore. Its said that if that plant blew up, it would level about a 1/4 of Decatur, which is a decent sized town here in Alabama.

Re: Acetylene safety pics

wtf would that have to do with it? because a chevy would have enough rot to not allow the gas to build up?

so, how can you tell that the owner scouffed at the 65 warning labels on the tank, at the shop, on the tools and common damn sense to not store a flammible contain in a confined space?

Re: Acetylene safety pics

When I was in high school shop, I was messing around with the torches and turned the "air" on to blow some flux that you braze with back into the can. Who ever used it before had left some little pieces all over the top. The can had a little hole about 1/2 an inch in it to stick the rod down into. Well, I obviously filled the can with acetylene and when the next kid came along to use the torch to braze with, he heated the rod and plunged it into the hole. It blew flux all over the shop and the kid had to change his shorts. The teacher laughed his butt off when he found out what happened.
