Sm465 problem

I started to crank my fresh motor in the 4x4 for the first time and even though the shifter was in neutral as was the transfer case the frame (no cab yet) lurched forward. I had the 465 shifter out to be powder coated and thought it went back the way it came out. Any tips or suggestions on getting neutral realligned?

Re: Sm465 problem

do a better job finding neutral.

disconnect the drive shafts if you just want to start and run it.

Re: Sm465 problem

If you removed the shifter rod from the tower, pull it back out & with a big screw driver go into the top & line up all the rails. Then put it back in making in with it going into the opening in the rails. If you had the tower off let us know & we can in struck how to put it on.

I suppose you are right I could do a better job of finding neutral maybe it has moved to the upper left or lower right and silly me thought it was supposed to be in the middle.

Wrenchbender I appreciate the help, the shifter is out of the tower and I can see the slide rail on the left, but when I press it with a large screw driver it moves but moves right back. The top has not been off the trans so the shifter forks have not been changed or moved. Thank you for your help.

Re: Sm465 problem

I'm sure you already tried but can you feel the transmission engage each forward gear and if so does the selector seem to be in the correct position when you select 1st through 4th?
I think you said it lurched forward and with the case in N that seems unlikely also as either one (trans or t/c) in neutral should prevent the engine from being connected to the drive line.
I'd try putting the trans in what feels like neutral, removing the selector and look down the tower to see if the rails ar aligned and then see what is up with the transfer case. It must be in something other than neutral.
Good luck!

Re: Sm465 problem

The rail on the left has a spring loaded button in it that gives resistance when shifting to reverse. That button should be lined up with the slots in the other rails. You should be able to put the lever in the center & it should work.

Re: Sm465 problem

We have neutral. The trans was in a bind, I lifted the front pumpkin up a little and things started working. Thanks for the replies.
