Steering problems
Hey guys have a steering issue here hoping someone can help me out or point me in the right direction.
It's a 86 2wd. Problem is that I have a ton of slop in the wheel. When turning it takes a extra spin of the steering wheel to get it to turn. So I'm wondering what it could be so I'm not replacing parts to try to find the problem. Possible gear box issue? Well any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Steering problems
Correct
Have someone turn the steering wheel side to side (about 3" each way not lock to lock). Start at the tie rod ends and work your way up to the nut that's holding the wheel for worn or loose componants. Idler arm wear is common and a reasonable fix. I don't know if anyone here has adjusted some of the loosness from a steering gear box but some slop can be taken up on most steering boxes. It's a delicate adjustment maybe someone can chime in that's more familiar. These trucks still steer like trucks not like a small imports. |
