Poll; What Percent Of Your Build Do/Did You Perform

Just curious how much of your build you performed or are performing yourself, With the only exceptions being specialized machine and tranny work ?

If you performed 100% of your build please post a couple pics, I could use the inspiration to get motivated again on my 8yr 74 project.....

Thanks !

Re: Poll; What Percent Of Your Build Do/Did You Perform

so far... EVERYTHING! the only thing that someone else is going to do on mine is spray her down with red jewel. (thats the plan anyways) i'm going to get the cab over to mather air force base this spring (hopefully) and start the body work in class with my auto body teacher and have him spray it. all the pics are in my build thread... from sandblasting to assembly.

my best motivator is from my friends on this board and a rendering that i had done from eastside design lab that i constantly find myself staring at on the computer and living room wall good luck man. just get a plan together and follow it the best you can doing 1 thing at a time, the right way, little by little.

Re: Poll; What Percent Of Your Build Do/Did You Perform

The last go around everything but the AC charge, front end alignment and the exhaust. This time I'm gonna do the exhaust. I guess I'll farm out the interior and probably have someone install the gears and locker. Everything else I'll have my hands in. I figured instead of paying to have everything done, I'll spend the money on tools and know it's done just how I want it.

Re: Poll; What Percent Of Your Build Do/Did You Perform

I didn't vote, but I would say 90-95%. I can't do a true front end alignment at home, I haven't rebuilt an automatic trans since 1989, and I could go either way on painting myself or having someone else do it. Everything else I can/have done at home.

Re: Poll; What Percent Of Your Build Do/Did You Perform

So far I have done maybe 85% myself. I paid for the interior, tranny rebuild and exhaust. I have done the body work, electrical, and suspension and all mods required to fit. I am not sure if I will paint it or not but motor and engine compartment will be my work.

Wished I had a real buddy Bob, I've found the only buddy's I have is when THEY need a hand. I've since cut strings with all of them and do everything myself.

Well Aaron, I've never rebuilt a auto tranny is why I bought mine already built but I feel right at home doin a standard tranny. BTW, I saved a link to the vid clip you made and watch it from time to time. Thanks !

Can't argue with that Ceeten, After seeing all the butcher jobs while I was in the auto biz makes me cringe at the thought of anyone else putting a wrench on any of my vehicles.

That's understandable Bob, Not too many people have a alignment rack in there back yard. You can bet I'll be watching the guy that does mine like a hawk....

That's what I thought too, But after looking at some of the local body shops work, I decided why pay someone to screw up what I can myself.

Re: Poll; What Percent Of Your Build Do/Did You Perform

I have worked with buddys but we usually drink more beer than we do work. I work alot by myself now unless it requires a hand to lift something. Also good point about finding someone that won't butcher your ride, hard to find a honest shop these days and if you find one stick with them forever.

Oh, and this made me laugh a little. Body work is easy to me. I guess it is just more natural for me than the mechanical. And especially moreso than wiring. I hate electrical.

I try to do everything. If i need a specialized tool, I buy it. I've seen too much shoody shop work to trust them anymore.

I plan to do 100% with the only exception being maybe the paint. See how I feel with the time comes and what the price differences are.

Re: Poll; What Percent Of Your Build Do/Did You Perform

So far I have done 98% of the work. My buddy primed it (he gets 2% for that) and will likely paint it. I am likely going to have to have a shop cut down my windshield but I may even give that a go before it's all over.

Did everything except engine bay paint and interior paint. I can't afford to pay somebody for something I am perfectly capable of.

I voted 100% but some of the mechanical work I have had my friends do with me. (I can't do the motor and suspension stuff without the help & guidance.) But I have not paid anybody to do anything. That is the joy of having friends. Even if there are only a couple.
