67 fleet short box wood

Im doing a frame off and have painted all pieces and finished sealing the wood. I'm ready to start assembly but need to know where to start, are there any tricks? I've invested to much to screw this up :-)

Re: 67 fleet short box wood

Im gonna say it depends on how you are planning on storing this truck. You could go out and get a real nice hi-gloss varnish, if the thing only comes out on nice days. Im not sure how well they do with weather. There has to be a place that makes a weather resistant hi-gloss finish...

VA72C10- Thanks for the GMC Pauls site. Good info that will also help when I do my 55 in the future.
nibs- I used an oil based marine gloss spar urethane that Im hoping will weather well. Truck will be exposed to Arizona sun but little rain.

Re: 67 fleet short box wood

Just as an FYI,
If the wood finish is exposed to harsh sun (UV), the finish can lift in a short time. When I restore boats, I put a minimum of 10 coats of good marine varnish like Epiphanes (has UV blockers) on the decking. Then, if exposed to harsh sun for a season, another single coat is done at the beginning of the next boating season.

rsavage- what grit do you sand between finishes? I'm using 220 and on my third coat now.

Re: 67 fleet short box wood

Two years ago I put 5 coats of marine varnish on my floor. And the truck is mostly garaged. This summer I will be applying at least 3 more coats. And I just lightly sanded the wood between coats. The marine stuff is really thick and they don't recommend thinning it either. If I put 10 coats of the stuff i got on it, it would have been 1/8 inch thick. But overall it has held up real well. Very seldom seen much more than the sun and a few sprinkles once or twice and overspray from pressure washing the truck I guess.

Re: 67 fleet short box wood

KevinTM2,
220 works well. The last couple of coats I use a 320. Tack well between coats and use a real bristle brush with real varnish. bristle brushes are expensive compared to man made and you don't let them dry out - they are hung in thinner. Dust is your enemy in varnishing as it takes awhile to "set". Any dust in the air will find its way to varnished wood.
Sammy your bed looks great.

Re: 67 fleet short box wood

Here's a photo of the Chriscraft 17' Utility I restored. Photo was at the Clayton Boat Show. I sold it last year. Currently restoring a 56 Lyman.

Re: 67 fleet short box wood

I used 6 coats of Man o' War Spar Varnish and I used steel wool between each coat. Came out great.

Re: 67 fleet short box wood

Thanks. I 2nd the dust issues. And don't shake the varnish, stir let it set for a few minutes before coating.

Re: 67 fleet short box wood

Original question, place the side pieces along the wheel tub first, then the section with the cut out, and then work to the middle, the boards will have alot of space so the middle is easy. This is for a fleetside by the way, step side lay boards from side to middle. Good luck.
