Custom tach setup on ebay?

Let me preface this by saying I'm not trying to sell or advertise this... just found this on ebay and not sure I'd ever seen it before. Looks kinda interesting. I was curious what your thoughts are regarding this... here's the link.

Re: Custom tach setup on ebay?

By the way it is wired that is a third gen Camaro tach mechanism in a square body fuel gauge face plate.

I talked about doing this a while ago in the Camaro tach thread but haven't had the time to do the work. At least now I know it will fit and work

I would assume they are built on used cores. This would explain the scratches.

Re: Custom tach setup on ebay?

Someone linked that last week. I asked him if he could change the redline, thinking of buying the tach only. He replied that would cost me an extra $150.

I made several different redline overlays for the third gen tach with 7000 rpm range.

I also made a few variations with different tick mark separations and even a few that look like a monster tach with just 1000 rpm single digit numbering.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...6&postcount=96

The six cylinder tach can be used on a V-8 truck and the RPM range adjusted to 5250 rpm at full sweep if you only have a six cylinder tach to work with and the limited RPM isn't an issue.

If you are handy with a soldering iron you can change out some resistors and repair tach's that don't work, make them more accurate or revise the RPM range. thirdgen.org has a few threads about this.

I made a small gauge fuel level overlay too that could be used on a small gauge in any location in the pod. With the intact Camaro tach & oil pressure gauge using the overlay on the truck oil pressure gauge face makes it quick & easy.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...9&postcount=95

These were just my first test fit of the overlays and the shape will get refined to cover more area of the gauge faces.

Once I am happy with the overlay I will clear coat the gauges so the gloss level matches on all the faces. That is probably why the guy on ebay did overlays for all the gauges even though some don't need it, just so they all match.

There is a ton of great info over there. Many people over there have some serious skill and knowledge with the TBI & TPI ECM's and everything associated with them.

A lot of what they do also applies to our trucks too.

Much to be learned on that site.

Re: Custom tach setup on ebay?

Not factory style....even the 80's trucks only had a gauge that goes up to 5,000 rpms.

What an expensive alternative that doesn't even look factory....

Plus I would like to see how it even fits in the '73-'77 gauge clusters. That kit has the electric oil gauge.....

I would be concerned about accuracy; and the version shown had the International gauge identification.

Re: Custom tach setup on ebay?

I asked:

Dear gm_sports,

Hello,
I was wondering if you are willing to sell the Tach separate? What is the light under the tach needle? Do you manufacture these? and lastly, why are there so many terminals on the back of the tach?
Thanks, Joe

- jmzjak

They responded:

Dear jmzjak,

Tach is sold with other gauges as a set only. Light under the needle is "BRAKE". I do not make these, they are made for us by someone here on the west coast. Terminals are for the gauges and lights.

- gm_sports

I personally don't like the looks of the 4 gauges.....

I like that he added the extra scale to the tach, but I don't like the other four either. I guess it doesn't matter if he won't break them up. I'll do something else. Not sure what, and I haven't ruled out an AutoMeter on the dash.

The markings on the overlays he used are really fuzzy too. It makes them hard to read. Not the kind of quality that can be done easily these days.
