Gas tank filler neck grommet installation
Can a new filler neck grommet be installed without taking out the gas tank? Can it stretch over the neck from the outside?
thanks Mark 1970 c10 |

Re: Gas tank filler neck grommet installation
Soap up the grommet good, slip over neck and used a pick from the inside of cab to help pull the lip over.

Re: Gas tank filler neck grommet installation
Here's the trick. Put the grommet in a pan of boiling water and heat it up. Hot enough so you can just barely hold it your hands. Lube it up with dish soap or WD40 and it will go right in. This also works for installing new vent window rubber (which is pretty hard). I've used this method for more than 30 years and it works every time.

Re: Gas tank filler neck grommet installation
I've always used WD40 and they pop right in.

Re: Gas tank filler neck grommet installation
Once you get it installed, you can use a little silicone caulk to actually make it weatherproof...

For replacement grommets you only need to know two words: Classic Heartbeat.... LockDoc Quote: "Hey you guys having all the trouble with your gas filler grommets... We have had our own grommet produced and we provide a 5 year warrantee against cracking, fading or any degradation. Made in the USA!! They are not as cheap as the others but you wont be pulling your tank every few months replacing it either.... WES" http://www.classicheartbeat.com/ No I don't work for them, or own the business...

Re: Gas tank filler neck grommet installation
I completely agree with LocDoc above .I bought 2 of the grommets from another supplyer and not even a year out they were shot ,completely rotten .I have since replaced them with the ones from ClassicHeartbeat .

Re: Gas tank filler neck grommet installation
I looked at that too. I think that is just for the New Old Stock ones. Call and talk to Wes about what you need. I think he is reproducing them now. LockDoc

Re: Gas tank filler neck grommet installation
Not to hijack the thread, but how do you get the old grommet off without scratching the paint or damaging anything?

Re: Gas tank filler neck grommet installation
I took a new and very sharp razor knife and cut around the perimeter of the gas filler neck and then pushed it thru into the cab with a screw driver .Im sure there is probably a better or easier way but it worked for me twice .
When I installed the new ones I rubbed the filler neck and the grommet with baby oil and worked it right in place . |
